Wilmer "Sonny" Hoffer, 86, of McClusky, ND died Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at the Turtle Lake Community Memorial Hospital in Turtle Lake.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 29 at Grace Lutheran Church, McClusky, ND.  Burial will be in the McClusky City Cemetery.

Visitation will from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday January 28 at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

He was born near Lincoln Valley, ND to Katie (Krein) and Theobald Hoffer Jr. They farmed north of McClusky.

He married Virginia Marson on July 12, 1953 in McClusky and together they raised five children on a farm north of McClusky.  They enjoyed attending horse shows, horse racing, snowmobiling and going to Canada fishing.  After farming and ranching, he did custom hay grinding and CRP clipping.

He served in the US Air Force, was on the rural fire department for 50 years and was instrumental in organizing the McClusky Ambulance. Sonny came to the aid of others. He spearheaded many work groups to assist neighbors and friends when they needed help.  Sonny served on the McClusky City and Grace Lutheran council and was a Sheridan County commissioner. He was a former commander of the James Roberts American Legion Post.

Sonny is survived by his wife Virginia of 64 years, children: Cindy, Julie (Bob), Steve (Allison), Nancy (Brian), Russ, 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters: Elsie Erickson, Ella Fandrich, Freda Keszler, Lorraine Carlson, and Delores Krebsbach.
