Willis M. Meckle, 74, McClusky, died Friday January 30, 2015, at Sanford Health hospital, Bismarck surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky, ND on Wednesday, February 4 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a family vigil starting at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 5 at 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in McClusky, ND, with Pastor William Traphagan and layman Craig Pankow officiating.
Burial will be in the McClusky City Cemetery.
Willis was born June 7, 1940 on the family farm near Denhoff, ND to Gust and Lydia (Roemmich) Meckle. He was baptized in Goodrich ND and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church on Main Street in McClusky, ND. He attended country school near McClusky. Following school he left the family farm and worked as a farmhand on the Melvin Flatlie homestead north of Denhoff. Willis married Pearl Rittenbach on November 1, 1959 at St. John's Lutheran Church in McClusky. They moved to Bismarck where he worked for Dakota Sand and Gravel. Willis and Pearl moved back to McClusky where they raised two children, Brenda Lynn (1962) and Rhonda Kay (1967). Willis was blessed with his only grandchild, Amber Sardae Johnson in 1988. After a short time trucking, he founded Meckle Excavating in 1966. He worked in this profession he loved until his passing.
Willis was longtime faithful member of St John's Lutheran Church in McClusky, ND where he held several offices. He liked to attend Polka Fest activities with his wife and annual Thrashing Shows in the state. Willis was an avid boxing and baseball fan and loved to take trips to the Twin Cities and attend Minnesota Twins baseball games.
Willis is survived by his wife, Pearl of McClusky, two daughters, Brenda Lynn Johnson, West Saint Paul MN; Rhonda Kay Meckle, McClusky; grandchild Amber Sardae Johnson (Brenda) West Saint Paul MN; brothers and sisters: Gertrude Helm, Bismarck, Emma Siems, Bismarck, Luella Coulter, Eden Prairie, MN, Joyce Demchuck, Mandan, Rodney Meckle, Center, ND, Grace Gaylord, Apple Valley, MN, Gloria McCurdy, Mesa, AZ, Orlan Meckle, Coeur D Alene, ID, Calvin Meckle, Soulsbyville, CA. Willis is also survived by many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Willis was preceded in death by his parents; Gust and Lydia and his brother Gus Jr. his sisters, Selma (Sally) Zeller, and Clara Weidrich.
