Walter Streifel, 92, Harvey, ND died Sunday, February 21, 2016 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 26, 2016 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Harvey, ND.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Rosary/Prayer Services at 7 p.m. all on Thursday, February 25, at the St. Cecilia Catholic Church.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Friday in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Esmond, ND.

Walter was born on March 11, 1923 in Pierce County near Esmond, ND. Walter was the son of Thomas Jr. and Katherine (Hager) Streifel. He grew up in the Esmond area and graduated from the Esmond High School and attended the State School of Science in Wahpeton. He started farming near Esmond in 1943.

Walter married Ann Margaret Lauinger on May 29, 1944 at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Esmond. They lived and farmed west of Esmond. In conjunction with his farming, Walter worked for the State Hail Insurance Department for seven years. Walter became a state inspector in 1956. He went to work for Dornberger Company in 1959 and served as a supervisor. Walter joined Old Republic Insurance Co. in 1968 and in 1972 was assigned Regional Supervisor for ND, SD, MN, NE, IA and part of MT. Under his supervision the business outgrew the Jamestown, ND office and another office opened in Spokane, WA in 1978. Walter was assigned Regional Claims Manager for the Jamestown and Spokane offices. He retired on January 9, 1989 and returned to the workforce as a consultant the next month and continued in that capacity for another seven years. Walter and Ann moved to Harvey in 2004 and were very active in their church and community. Ann died on November 27, 2011.

Walter and his wife Ann spent several years wintering in Phoenix, AZ. He enjoyed dancing, golfing, fishing and bowling. In 1989, Walter won the ND Senior Citizens Bowling Tournament and was awarded an all expense paid trip to the National Tournament in Niagara Falls. He supported the communities in which he lived and their high school teams. He enjoyed attending and watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting and extracurricular activities.

Walter was a member of St Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey and a former member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. He was a member of the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Council 6666 of Esmond and the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly 1549 of Harvey. Walter was a member of the Esmond School Board and drove school bus for many years. He was a member of the Wells Eagles Aerie in Harvey since 1956. He was also a member of the Elks Club. He also served on the Wells Sheridan Senior Citizens and Esmond Township Boards.

Walter is survived by his children, Donald (Loretta) Streifel of Washburn, Diane (John) Peyerl of Penn, ND, Randall E. (Jane) Streifel of Powers Lake, ND, Ernest (Lonna) Streifel of Harvey, Thomas (Vicki) Streifel of Tracy, MN, Rosalie (Randy) Axtman of Harvey; 21 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Agnes Streifel of Esmond, Florence Lauinger, Hancock, MN, Lorraine Brewer of White Lake, MI, Teresa Lauinger of Esmond; brother-in-law, Edward (Mary) Lauinger of Devils Lake.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ann; brother, Art Streifel; sisters, Otilia as a child, Leona as an infant and Genevieve Olson.
