Walter J. Bachmeier, 95, Minot formerly of Harvey and Esmond died Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at the Trinity Nursing Home in Minot, ND.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, May 2 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Harvey, ND.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 1 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.
Graveside Services will be Tuesday, May 3 at 1 p.m. at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
He was born February 6, 1921 on the farm South of Esmond to Daniel and Theresia (Sander) Bachmeier. Walter attended Rich Valley Country School. Walter worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps and Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, WA before enlisting in the Marines in June of 1942. Walter was in the 3rd Division which fought at Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Guam. He was Honorably Discharged from the Marines with the rank of Lance Corporal.
Walter returned to the farm near Esmond. He married Eileen Grace Smith on November 13, 1946. Walter and Eileen farmed for 50 years but in the earlier years started a construction business which included building machine sheds, home remodeling and home building. They moved to Harvey ND in 1981 but still farmed until 1996. Walter and Eileen Bachmeier have resided at the Wellington Assisted Living since December 2009.
Walter served as a Trustee for the St. Boniface Church in Esmond and was active as a VFW member and the Harvey Eagles Club. Walter's greatest pastime was playing cards with friends and watching America's favorite sport of baseball.
Walter is survived by his wife of 69 years, Eileen; 6 children and their spouses. David (Carmen) Bachmeier of Minot, ND, Bonny Kemper of Minot, ND, Bernadette (Wayne) Olson of Fishers, IN, Beth (Gerald) Borho of Minot, ND, Barb Bachmeier (Kevin Lauerman) of Indianapolis, IN, and Daryl Bachmeier of Fargo, ND. At the time of his death, Walter had 15 Grandchildren and 13 Great-Grandchildren.
He is survived by four brothers and four sisters; Jack Bachmeier, Joe Bachmeier, Leonard Bachmeier, Marvin Bachmeier, Philomena Aylesworth, Ann Larson, Julia Aschburger, and Helen Zarr. Walter is preceded in death by his father Daniel Bachmeier and his mother Theresia, his brothers John Bachmeier, Albert Bachmeier, sister's Katherine Bachmeier, Mary Pfau, and Irene Buckner. Also preceding Walter in death was an infant Granddaughter, Cassandra Bachmeier and two Great-Grandsons Shadrach and Quaid Olson.
Walter died surrounded by family on April 27th, 2016 in Minot, ND.
Memorials are preferred to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in care of the North Dakota Veterans Foundation, 1825 46th Street, Mandan, ND 58554
