Virginia A. Widicker, 96, Bowdon, ND passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2023 at the Bowdon Country Seventh- day Adventist Church, Bowdon, ND with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 11 at the church and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Virginia Alma Weisz Widicker was born on August 30, 1926, on a farm near Hurdsfield, ND to Andrew and Lydia (Schmitke) Weisz. She was their middle child of seven. Virginia attended a country school for her elementary education and graduated from Sheyenne River Academy at Harvey in May of 1944. That fall she enrolled at Union College in Lincoln, NE to start classes for a career in nursing. In the spring of 1946, she came back to North Dakota to spend the summer on her parent's farm but instead found herself working on the Widicker farm near Bowdon. Virginia left home and never came back as she married Leo Widicker that fall on November 4 th . The marriage took place at her Uncle Hank and Aunt Alice Weisz's home in Hurdsfield. It was a double ceremony with her brother Robert and Bernice Meier.
Virginia and Leo operated a grain and cattle farm on the original home place south of Bowdon.
She kept busy with the lawn, garden, cooking, and anything that goes with farm life. She also was an accomplished seamstress and loved to knit. She was an active member of the Bowdon Country Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Leo and Virginia joined an organization called Maranatha Volunteers that built schools and churches around the world. Their first project was in 1977 at Crief, Scotland; her last was in 2015 in Salvador, Brazil. They were rewarded by the smiles and thank yous people gave to have a church to worship in. Virginia worked on 60 projects and was in 23 different countries. Leo went missing on a project in Costa Rica on November 18, 2001, a tragic loss and still a mystery as to the circumstances.
Virginia is survived by her daughter JoAnn (Delvin) Hansen, Harvey, ND; daughter-in-law, Linda Widicker, Bowdon, ND; grandchildren, Kristin (Clayton) Schwarck, Breckenridge, CO, Rick Widicker, Jamestown, ND, Kief (Andrea) Hansen, Rapid City, SD, Ryan Widicker, Lincoln, NE, Amy (Johnny) Thom, Bismarck, ND; great-grandchildren, Tia and Kaden Widicker, Kason and Jaxon Hansen, Emerie, Molly and Aubrey Thom; sister, Helen (Don) Myres, Lincoln, NE; and many nieces and nephews.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; parents; son, Rodney; four sisters, Lorraine Patzer, Betty Gutknecht, Dorothy Weisz, and Dessa Hardin; brother, Robert; brothers-in-law, Willard Gutknecht, Robert Patzer, Barton Hardin; sister-in-law, Bernice Weisz.
