Vernon Dockter, 94 of Minot, ND formerly of Martin, died Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Trinity Homes in Minot.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 20 at the Emanuel Baptist Church, Minot, ND.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Martin Baptist Cemetery, Martin, ND.
Vernon was born on June 19, 1924 on a farm southwest of Martin, ND. He was the youngest of twelve children born to Jacob and Marie (Henne) Dockter. He grew up on the family farm and attended the Berlin Township Country School. Vernon graduated from the Martin High School in 1943.
Vernon and Dorothy Eckart were united in marriage on November 11, 1945 in Martin. They spent the first two years of their married life on a farm southwest of there. They moved into Martin in the fall of 1948 where he operated a Standard Oil bulk station. He was then employed by the Soo Line Railroad from October 1950 until retiring as a conductor in 1986. Dorothy died on August 23, 1999. He moved to Minot in 2000. He enjoyed an active retirement. He followed his grandchildren and attended their school activities. He also worked for the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation in Medora during the summer months from 2001 to 2003. He also worked at Miracle Mart, was a substitute mail truck driver and served as a Walmart Greeter. Vernon's hobbies included walking, riding bike, fishing and took pride in being known as the "Fix-it Man"
Vernon was attending the Immanuel Baptist Church in Minot and was a member of the Martin Baptist Church.
Vernon is survived by four children, Sherwin (Sharon) Dockter of Rapid City, SD, Mark (Debra) Dockter of Clancy, MT, Vicki (Tim) Miller of Minot, Barry (Lori) Dockter of Minot; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Filler of Harvey.
Vernon was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brothers Bennie as infant, Edward, Henry, Wilbert; sisters, Edna Heitmann, Elsie Dockter, Alma Heitmann, Emma Heitmann and Ruth Reimche, Esther Reimche. Share online at www.hertzfuneralhomes.com
