Obituary

Thomas Richard Berg, 84, of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Harvey, ND, died Wednesday, February 24, 2016 in Mesa, AZ.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the First Lutheran Church, Harvey, ND.

Cemetery services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2016 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

Tom was born on February 21, 1932 in Mayville, ND. He was the son of Samuel and Buelah (Sparrow) Berg. After his parents died in 1936 he moved to Minot, ND and was raised by his aunt and uncle, Iver and Clara (Berg) Orheim. He graduated from Minot High School in 1950. He was captain of the Minot High state champion football team in 1949-1950. Tom briefly attended college at NDSU in Fargo. He joined the army in 1951 during the Korean War and was stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, MO and later went to engineering school at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He was a member of the 10th Combat Engineers graduating at the top of his class. He was then deployed to Korea where he was a platoon Sergeant Honor Guard for a general. He earned the National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged from the army at Fort Carson, CO in 1954.
Tom married Beverly Harstad, his high school girlfriend, in Bethesda, MD, on June 8, 1953. They made their home in Minot where Tom was a bricklayer and a partner in Orheim Construction Company. In 1968 he became the owner of Harvey Ready Mix in Harvey, ND. He owned and operated the business until his retirement in 1997.
Tom was a member of the Wells Eagles Aerie #3080 where he was a past president and American Legion both of Harvey. He also served on the St. Aloisius Medical Center Board of Directors in Harvey.
Tom was an avid golfer. He enjoyed cooking and loved his time spent with his grandchildren and his four great-grandchildren.
Tom is survived by his wife, Beverly of Mesa, AZ; children, Dr. Alan Berg (Dr. Susan Hansen) of Lincoln, NE; Cathy Amstrup (Robert Amstrup) of Bismarck, ND; Duane Berg of Devils Lake, ND; three grandchildren, Christian Berg, Tanya Berg (Adam Bohnenstingl), Kelsey Buckley (Mark Buckley); four great-grandchildren; Connor, Shanessa, Teegan, and Korbyn Thomas; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Rice and Darlene Harstad; brother-in-law, Aurlen Harstad (Nancy) and nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Keith Berg, sisters, Colleen Hill and Buelah Knodle.

Memorials are preferred to the First Lutheran Church, 1520 Advent Street Harvey, ND 58341 or to the family for charitable designation.
