Obituary

Russell Haugen, 67 of Martin, ND died Saturday April 6, 2013 at the St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 11 at the Mennonite Brethren Church, Harvey.

Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

There will be no reviewal at the church.

Russell Sheldon Haugen was born April 11, 1945 in Joliet, Illinois. He was the third of six children born to Bennie and Marian (Fairweather) Haugen. He grew up on the family farm north of Souris, ND. He attended elementary school in Souris and graduated from Dakota Lutheran Academy in Minot. He went on to receive an Industrial Arts degree from the University of North Dakota at Ellendale, ND. He taught Industrial Arts at Zeeland, ND and at Harvey High School in the early 1970's. Russell and Sharon McKinven were united in marriage on April 7, 1966 in Harvey. They lived on a farm southeast of Martin in Sheridan County. He started a tree nursery and began custom tree moving. He later owned and operated Harvey Tire Center from 1987 until retiring in 2006. They spent recent winters in Texas.

Russell's hobbies included hunting deer, square dancing, metal detecting, woodworking and fabricating items made of wood or metal. He learned to fly and owned his own airplane. Russell was a passionate shuffleboard player and had achieved expert status in Texas. He also loved to travel having visited Norway, Australia, New Zealand and Alaska. Russell was an avid fisherman and enjoyed annual fishing trips to Canada for over 50 years.

Russell was a member of Trinity Bethany Lutheran Church in Harvey and served on the church council.

Russell is survived by his wife Sharon of 47 years; son Shane and daughter-in-law Amy of Beulah, ND, their two daughters, Kelsey and Carley; daughter Shonella and son-in-law, Dean Lemer of Martin, ND and their daughter, Kailey; four sisters, Priscilla (Mylo) Wattenford of Manhatten, KS, Dorothy (Harvey) Klitzke of Bella Vista, AR, Susan, (Rev. Terry) Sletto of Mandan, ND, Cynthia (Mark) Resner of Mott, ND; sister-in-law, Margo Knudson of Bottineau, ND.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Blaine Haugen; brother-in-law, James Kunkel.
