Roy was born on June 22, 1938 on a family farm near McClusky to Herbert and Margaret (Marchant) Hoffman. He was prematurely delivered into the world by his grandmother and was placed in a shoe box on the oven door to keep him warm. He grew up in Sheridan County and graduated from Wing High School in 1957. He served in the United States Army from December 1958 to November 1960, was stationed in Germany, and was honorably discharged. He also served in the North Dakota National Guard.
Roy married Darlene Witt on March 17, 1962 and was later divorced. He lived in Bismarck where he worked at several retail and service establishments while maintaining his hobby farms. He returned to McClusky in the 1980's and was employed by the Sheridan County Court house where he was the custodian for a number of years before retiring. He owned several homes in McClusky and rented them out for a several years.
Roy lived on the southeast side of McClusky where he raised chickens, geese, ducks and even cared for a small flock of sheep. He always had a favorite pet or two! He loved his animals as much as life. He had large gardens which produced fresh vegetables that he preserved for his personal needs and for others. He took great pride in his work and it showed. Later in life he would drive his riding lawn mower around town doing whatever errands needed to be done. He was a wonderful cook and enjoyed having family at his house for holidays. He always enjoyed visits from his many nieces and nephews and was not afraid to put them through the paces (work).
Roy is survived by a brother, Harold Hoffman of Bismarck; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Carol Wrangham and Sharon Ferm, and nephew Roy Benedict. Share online at www.hertzfuneralhomes.com Arrangements with Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky, ND.
