Obituary

Roger Loerch, 80 of Harvey, ND died Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at the St. Aloisius Hospital, Harvey.

Funeral services will be held at the First Lutheran Church, Harvey on Saturday, January 21 at 2 p.m.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hertz Funeral Home of Harvey. A prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND.

Roger Charles Loerch was born on November 7, 1936 in Bismarck, ND to Loraine (L.C.) and Mayola (Nagel) Loerch. The family moved to Minot and then in 1946 to Harvey. Roger graduated from the Harvey High School in 1954. He attended the University Of North Dakota where he was a student manager for the varsity football team. He also attended Minot State University for a year. He entered the Army in 1960 and served stateside. He married Maxine Rauk on August 6, 1961 in Harvey. They lived in San Antonio, TX and he was honorably discharged in October 1962. They returned to Harvey where he began working for his father at the Westland Oil in Harvey until it closed in 1985. He then owned and operated Loerch's Lawn and Video until 2002. He served as the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie # 3080 Secretary from 1994 to 2011 and was a past president there also.

Roger's interests included becoming a broadcaster for area sports teams. Radio broadcasting became his passion and he became known as "The Voice", announcing sports for twenty years for KHND Radio and Loerch's Video Productions in Harvey. He was a passionate LA Dodgers baseball and University of North Dakota fan. He was also a high school football and basketball referee.

Roger was a 51 year member, training officer and Past Fire Chief of the Harvey City Fire Department. He served as President of the North Dakota Firefighters Association in 1988 and received the North Dakota Firefighter of the Year in 1989. In 2007 he was inducted into the North Dakota Firefighters Hall of Fame.

Roger coached baseball for 41 years. He was inducted into the North Dakota Babe Ruth Hall of Fame in 1992. He also received the "Award Of Merit" from the ND High School Coaches Association. He was inducted into the North Dakota High School Wrestling Hall Of Fame for being the first to broadcast high school wrestling meets and the state wrestling tournament. Roger was the current secretary for the Harvey Park District and took great pride in maintaining and improving the park system. The newly completed grandstand at the Veterans Memorial Park will be named "Roger C. Loerch Stadium at L. C. Loerch Field."

Roger was a former member and office holder at the United Methodist Church, Harvey. He is a current member of First Lutheran Church.

Roger's legacy is one of many years of service and dedication to his family, church, community and country.

Roger is survived by his wife Maxine; sons, Kenneth of Urbana, IL, Ritchie of Davie, FL, Scott of Bismarck; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Carol Grossman of Everett, WA. Roger was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Marlyn Faul; brothers-in-law, Bob Faul and Marvin Grossman.
