Robert was born on January 25, 1927 in Eden Valley, Minnesota. He was the youngest of eleven children. Robert was the son of Oscar and Ida (Kummet) Lorenz. At the age of nine he was helping his dad shovel coal and gravel and at the age of sixteen he worked on the railroad section crew during the summer months. Hard work was something Bob knew well. Bob graduated from Eden Valley High School in 1944. He entered the army in 1945. He was sent to Japan in October of 1945. He was then transferred from the infantry to the construction engineers and helped clean up Tokyo, operating a bulldozer and a grader.
In 1947 he entered Elgin Watchmakers College in Elgin, Illinois where he graduated in 1948. His first position as a watchmaker was in Litchfield, Minnesota. He moved to Harvey in January of 1949 and worked for Nesbits Jewelry until March of 1951. Bob married Ruth Elayer on July 24, 1950 in Harvey. In 1951 they started Lorenz Jewelry in a small area in the locker plant which was the first of five locations all on Lincoln Ave in Harvey. They closed the last store on December 31, 2004.
Bob loved to fish and hunt with his family, but his greatest joy came from watching his boys and grandchildren play baseball and basketball. His family came first in his life. Bob played in the Harvey City Band and the clown band from 1949 to 2004.
Bob is survived by his wife, Ruth of Harvey; children, Lynda (Dean) Johnson of Harvey, Kevin (Laura) Lorenz of Bottineau, Robin Lorenz of Taylors, South Carolina, Gregg (Karen) Lorenz of Harvey, Jason (Cheryl) Lorenz of Aberdeen, South Dakota; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; Bob was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; 6 sisters.
