Obituary

Richard C. Smestad 72 of Harvey died Saturday January 11, 2014 at the St. Alexius Hospital of Bismarck.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15 at the Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.

Richard was born on February 10, 1941 on the family farm northwest of Harvey that was to be his lifelong home. He was the son of Leonard and Loretta (Weber) Smestad. He grew up on the family farm. He attended school in Harvey and lettered four years in football and also played basketball. Richard graduated from the Harvey High School in 1959 and was the class Valdictorian. He received an appointment to and attended the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO for several months. He then attended the University Of North Dakota in Grand Forks before returning to the farm near Harvey. Richard was co-founder with his parents of Smestad Poultry Farms, which for over five decades served the residents of north central North Dakota by producing Grade AA Fresh Eggs at the rate of 3.5 million per annum. He retired and continued to live at his rural home.

Richard was once married to Susan Trevethan.

Richard was a long time member and past president of the North Dakota Poultry Producers Association. He was appointed by Governor William Guy to the ND State Poultry Improvement Board. He was a member of the Harvey Jaycees and was awarded the 1972 Harvey Jaycee Outstanding Young Farmer award. In 1973 he received the North Dakota Farmer's Union Outstanding Young Farmer award. He served 12 years as the Hillsdale Township Supervisor. He also served in and was honorably discharged from the US Air Force.

Richard's achievements also included becoming a licensed airplane pilot. He was a lifelong sports fan and in particular rooted for the Minnesota Vikings.

Richard is survived by his sister, Beverly Vander Vorst of Harvey; three nephews, Garth Vander Vorst, Jerome Hagemeister and Mark Hagemeister; five great nieces and nephews; aunt, Emaline Marchand of Harvey and uncle, Louis Weber of Idaho Falls, ID.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Loraine Hagemeister.
