Richard was born to Marvin and Lorraine (Pfaff) Schulz in Bismarck, ND. He was raised on the family farm near Washburn with 5 siblings. He graduated in 1962 from Washburn High School.
He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Lynn Gentz, on October 6, 1962. Three children were born to this union.
They moved to Fargo while he attended Hansen's Mechanical Trade School to be an Engine Machinist. The family moved to Harvey where he began his first job as a machinist at Genuine Parts Co. for 19 years.
In 1985, Dick and Mary Lynn opened their own family business, Schulz Engine & Machine. Dick continued to work until his failing health, which gave an employee of 19 years the opportunity to purchase the business to carry on Dick's legacy.
After 41 years of marriage, Mary Lynn passed away on November 1, 2003. He married Barbara (Miller) Kittler on April 2, 2005 doubling both of their families. They shared a love of racing, family and church.
Dick began his racing career in Fargo in 1965 by purchasing his first racecar from a school instructor. There began a love affair that never ended. His racing career spanned 4 decades, where his nickname changed from Grumpy Dick to Grandpa Dick over time. He captured many titles in his career including track championships in Rugby, Mandan, and Minot. He was a Governor's Cup, State Fair, Motor Mania, Motor Magic, and Harvest 100 champion. He was most proud of his 6 time titles at Nodak Race Club in Minot and his 2 time National Wissota Street Stock Runner-up. In 2014, he was recognized for his lifetime accomplishments and inducted into the Nodak Race Club Hall of Fame.
