Richard was born November 14, 1931 in Harvey to Helmuth & Mary (Putz) Eckart. He was raised in Martin as the only son, also known as the spoiled little boy, along with five sisters. On November 26, 1954, he was united in marriage to Joyce Schmidt. He entered into the military service with the US Army in 1954 and served with the 35th Engineer Battalion in Kitzingen, Germany. After returning from overseas, Dick worked at Bentz Implement in Harvey and began his dream of being a farmer. He farmed and raised cattle for many years. After retiring from farming, Dick couldn't sit still. He drove semi-truck, was a transporter for the railroad, and continued to help on the farm wherever and whenever he could.
Dick was very active in the Martin Baptist Church, the Anamoose VFW Oswald Wohl Post 6831, served on Truman Township Board as treasurer from 1971-present, served 25 years on the board of the Farmers Elevator Company in Martin, and various county boards. He spent endless hours on his snowmobile, motorcycle, four-wheeler, and tractor driving around the countryside and enjoying the beauty God created. Dick's love of hunting also kept him busy and was something he appreciated doing with family and friends.
