Patricia "Pat" Sweep, 78, McClusky, ND died Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the Sanford Health Hospital in Bismarck.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15 at Grace Lutheran Church, McClusky, ND.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Burial will be Monday, Dec. 19 at 1 p.m.at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

Patricia Joan Sweep was born on December 9, 1938 near Ulen, MN to John and Pauline (Thorsen) Burkel. She graduated Valedictorian from Ulen High School in 1956. She graduated from Moorhead State College in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Pat began her teaching career in Mahnomen, MN. Pat married Dennis Sweep on May 11, 1964 in Sisseton, SD. Pat's teaching career, which spanned from 1961 to 2007, included positions at Bismarck High School, Goodrich High School and McClusky High School. As well as teaching English, she served as the librarian and speech coach. Pat was an active member of her local North Dakota Education Association and served on the teacher negotiating team.

She was an active member of the Grace Lutheran Church in McClusky, having served as the council vice president and member of WELCA.

Pat was an avid reader, crossword puzzle and Sudoku enthusiast. Spending time with her son, Dan, and his family was one of her greatest enjoyments. Pat's quick wit was appreciated by friends and family. Her caring and non-judgemental presence was evident in her relationships.

Pat is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Jodi Sweep of Bismarck; four grandchildren, Kacie (Josh) Dinius, Ryan, Allyson and Zachary Sweep; three great-grandchildren, Ryder, Guyson and Bowdon Dinius; three brothers, John "Jack" (Marlene) Burkel of Vadnais Heights, MN and Mesa, AZ; Martin (Sheryl) Burkel of Madison and Bayfield, WI; Lowell "Gene" (Kay) Burkel of Thief River Falls, MN; sister, Elizabeth "Liz" (Coby) Derdzinske of San Clemente, CA; three sisters in law, Arlene Orvedal, Cando, ND, Jane (Kaylan) Smith, Midwest City, OK, Shirley Sweep, Mahnomem, MN; one brother-in-law, Duane Sweep, Burnsville, MN; as well as numerous, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dennis Sweep on November 6, 2005; her husbands parents as well as a baby brother, three brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
