Obituary

Orville L. Schindler, 86, McClusky, ND died Tuesday July 5, 2011 at his home near McClusky.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 8 at the Assembly of God Church, McClusky, ND.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

Visitation will be Thursday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Orville was born on November 27, 1924 on the family homestead northeast of McClusky. He was the son of Samuel and Bessie (Bennett) Schindler. He grew up there, attended rural school and graduated from the McClusky High School in 1942. He then began farming with his father.

He entered the army in 1942. He received a Purple Heart and was awarded a Bronze Star while serving in the Pacific during World War II. Orville was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to the farm near McClusky.

Orville married Adeline Reule on October 25, 1946 in McClusky. They lived and farmed northeast of McClusky and raised their family there. Orville was called back into the army during the Korean Conflict and served stateside from December 1950 to May 1951.

Orville was a member of the Assembly of God Church and served as Sunday School teacher and superintendant, as a youth leader and for 35 years as the church treasurer.

Orville was involved in his community; being an active member in the McClusky Lions, McClusky American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, and numerous other local committees. He served 19 years on the McClusky School Board, 35 years on the McClusky Rural Fire Department where he served as Fire Chief for 3 years. He also had the distinct honor of being elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives on November 7, 1972 and represented his district for 22 years before retiring in 1994. He was a true American, a great leader and proud to have served and be from the United States of America.

Orville is survived by his wife, Adeline, McClusky; son, Terry (DeEtta) Schindler, McClusky; daughter, Bonnie Dawson, Hankinson; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; brother, Melvin (Melva) Schindler, McClusky; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Pearleen Bauer; granddaughter, Jennifer Dawson.

Orville will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
