Myron W. Hovland, 80, of Harvey, ND gained his angel wings May 6, 2024 at St. Lukes Nursing Home in Dickinson, ND. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024 at First Lutheran Church, Harvey, ND where visitation will be for one hour prior to the service.
Committal services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND with military rites provided by the Navy Funeral Honors Team.
Myron W. Hovland was born to Norris and Borghild (Vik) Hovland on January 12, 1944, in Harvey ND. He was the oldest of three children. They were raised on a farm east of Wellsburg, ND, where they attended Bethania Lutheran Church. He attended Wellsburg Grade School and graduated from Harvey High School in 1962. Myron attended Minot State College and went on to attend Dakota Business College in Fargo, ND, graduating with an Associate Degree in accounting. Myron enlisted in the US Navy in January 1967. He was a Navy recruiter in Dickinson for 2 years. He was stationed in various locations including Naval Air Station in Whidbey Island in Washington; Naval Air Station in Barbers Point, Hawaii; with deployments to the Philippines, Japan, and then on to Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. After Myron's tour in Vietnam, he was off to U-Tapao Royal Thailand Airforce Base, followed by Bangkok Thailand, and ending in Hong Kong before returning to the Naval Air Station in North Island, CA.
Myron served on many US Carriers and various aircraft carriers, to include the USS Merrill which took him to the Naval station in San Diego, CA. Myron retired in 1989 in Yuma, AZ as a Chief Petty Officer. He proudly served his country and was honorably discharged with many awards, decorations and citations for his service to his country. He carried his military career with honor and dignity throughout his life. He was a true American Hero for his duties and responsibilities in the military and fighting for our freedom.
Myron was a member of the VFW and NRA. He enjoyed target shooting, hunting, playing cards and mostly spending time with his beloved family members, especially his daughter Melissa and grandson, Casey.
Myron is survived by his daughter, Melissa (Justin Sadowsky); grandson Casey Schwaderer both of Dickinson; sister Lynne Dick of Harvey, brother-in-law Gary Faul of Spanaway WA, and numerous nieces and nephews and their families; and his cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Cynthia Faul; brother-in-law, Barry Dick; and nephew David Davis.
