Monroe D Raugust, 85 Harvey, ND died Friday, April 1, 2011 in Harvey.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, at the Mennonite Brethren Church, Harvey. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.
Monroe Duane Raugust was born on August 10, 1925 in Harvey, ND. He was the son of John Reinhold and Lena (Liebelt) Raugust. He attended the Fairview Township School and graduated from the Harvey High School in 1943. After graduation he farmed with his father. He entered the army on September 16, 1946 and served as a military policeman in Japan after World War II. While in Japan he was the quarterback for the 25th Infantry Division "Stags" football team. Honorably discharged on December 29, 1947, he returned to the Harvey area and resumed farming and ranching. Monroe married Alvina Winter on June 27, 1948 in Harvey. They lived and farmed southwest of Harvey, and moved into Harvey in 1982.
Monroe was an active member of the Mennonite Brethren Church. He served on numerous committees and boards for both the local church and the Mennonite Brethren Central District. He enjoyed singing and acting and could be seen or heard performing something serious or absolutely silly. He played both fast pitch and slow pitch softball on area teams for 41 years and participated in numerous state and national softball tournaments. In 1987, He was inducted into the North Dakota Softball Hall Of Fame. Monroe enjoyed playing competitively on softball teams with his three sons. He was a member of the Goodrich Lions Club and was instrumental in the club sponsoring and chartering of the Harvey Lions Club in 1984. He was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from Lions International and was a current member of the Harvey Lions Club. Monroe served on the Fairview Township Board, Goodrich School Board, Sheridan Association, Committee To Save North Dakota, Sheridan Historical Society and received numerous awards of recognition for his farming, ranching and stewardship practices. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting deer, pheasants and partridge. A great supporter of area athletics, he was a regular at high school games in both Goodrich and Harvey watching his children, grandchildren and the families of his friends.
His love for his God, family, friends and country were evident in the way he lived his daily life, with trust and good humor.
Monroe is survived by his wife, Alvina (Winter), of Harvey, ND; three sons, Barry (Diana) Raugust of Wichita, KS; Hugh (Diana) Raugust of Harvey; Kim (Diane) Raugust of Goodrich; two daughters, Sharee Nelson, Bismarck, Jill (Ken) Martin of Moorhead, MN; twelve grandchildren; Tonya Bronleewe, Paul Raugust, Nick Raugust, Cody Raugust, Lisa Raugust, Kari Thompson, David Raugust, Amanda Karber, Jackie Eells, Quent Martin, Jen Martin, Miriah Noles; six great-grandchildren, Hazel and Luka Raugust, Piper Thompson, Lawson and Sterling Karber, Khloe Noels; numerous nieces and nephews, and brother-in-law, Ruben Winter, Goodrich.
Monroe was preceded in death by his two brothers, Hugo and Waldo; three sisters, Erna Fallon, Gerda Hill and Dorothy Fordney; and son-in-law, Myron Nelson.
