Melba Irene Henne was born to John and Mathilda (Schaefer) Henne on December 19, 1924 in Rupert, Idaho. Melba was the youngest of 7 children. In 1926, the Henne family moved to Wells County in North Dakota. Melba was raised on the farm and attended country school. During her high school years in Hurdsfield, she and her two older brothers lived in an upstairs apartment, Melba cooked, kept house, and did the laundry. Following graduation in 1942, Melba attended Interstate Business College in Fargo for 1 year. She was known for her beautiful penmanship skills. This led to teaching for 1 year in a country school near Lincoln Valley. While living with Bertha (Reiswig) and Rudolph Braunberger, whose children attended the school, Melba met Bertha's brother, Melvin Reiswig. The rest is history, as Melba and Melvin were married in 1944, They farmed north of McClusky for 46 years until Melvin's death in 1990. Together they raised 3 children.
Melba was a wonderful cook, having helped her mother cook for threshing crews. Her chickens and large gardens provided much food for the family. Her amazing sewing skills provided many clothes for her daughters, including their wedding dresses. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, and doing crafts. Melba was very involved in the United Methodist Church, both in women's activities, as well as teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School well into her 70's. She held many offices over the years in her church, PTA, Homemakers Club, as well as serving as a 4-H Leader.
In 2015, Melba moved to the Sheridan Memorial Home in McClusky and received the kind of loving care that she was so generous in giving to others. Melba's gentle spirit and caring was especially evident as she cared for her husband, Melvin, during his 8 month struggle with cancer. In August of 2019, she moved to the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck. Melba's greatest joy in later years was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
