She was born on December 23, 1927 and was raised in the Cavalier County, ND area by her parents John and Ada (Mumby) Carpenter. While growing up she went to school in Hannah, ND and then attended and graduated from Valley City State Teachers College.
Mary taught school in the Northeastern part of ND, including a one-room rural schoolhouse, before accepting a teaching position and moving to McClusky, ND where she spent the rest of her life. She was very active in many groups and volunteered at her church, as well as being a long-time member of the James Roberts Post 124 American Legion Auxiliary, McClusky.
Mary married McClusky native Clinton Neff on June 18, 1955. They lived and worked in McClusky where they raised their three sons, Michael (1958), Steven (1960) and Paul (1961). She enjoyed gardening and playing cards, but the things she loved most were her faith and spending time with her family. She will be greatly missed by her sons, their wives, and all her grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her sons Michael (Cindy) of Bismarck and their children David (Teresa), Daniel (Jenny) and Rachel; Steven (Nancy) of Sioux Falls, SD and their children Blake, Abby (Tyler) VanLiere, Mandy (Joel) Haas and Ryan; and Paul (Luisa) of Cleveland, OH and their children Cory and Olivia; four great-grandchildren and two additional great-grandchildren expected soon; her sister, Shirley Peterson, Mayville, ND; her sister-in-law, Alice Carpenter, Grand Forks, ND and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clinton, on June 18, 2020, on the day of their 65th wedding anniversary, three brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 22 from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in McClusky followed by Mary's funeral service at 2 p.m. at the church. Interment will take place following the funeral in the McClusky City Cemetery. Arrangements with Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.
