Marva (Furaus) Ness, 84 of Harvey, ND passed away peacefully with her children at her side due to complications from a stroke on Monday, October 11, 2021 at the Sanford Hospice House at Broadway Medical Center in Fargo, ND.
Marva Deane (Furaus) Ness, was born on July 16, 1937 to Philip and Florence (Torgerson) Furaus in Harvey, ND. Marva grew up in Harvey, with her parents, two sisters, and three brothers. Marva graduated Harvey High School in 1955 where she was active in the chorus, band, pep club, FHA, and the scouting programs. She went on to work for Northwestern Bell telephone company in Harvey and Fargo, ND. Marva later returned to Harvey in 1961 as a merchandise coordinator and assistant cashier at JC Penney's department store.
Marva married Leroy Ness (New Rockford) on July 15, 1967 in Harvey. She and Leroy had three children: Leann, Andrew, and William. After Leroy's death in August of 1977 Marva continued to work and live in Harvey, raising their three children single handedly. She worked many jobs in the Harvey community to provide for her family including the Harvey Ambulance Service serving as treasurer, the Vets Club, Sue Ann's, Double E Design, the Harvey Library, and the St. Aloisius Dietary Department.
Marva was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Harvey where she taught Sunday School, and was very active with her children in Luther League. She was a charter member of the Mrs. Jaycees (Jayceettes). Marva was active in the Harvey Sorosis Club, Eagles Auxiliary, Hospital Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and was the Wells County co-chairperson for the American Cancer Drive in 1978. She also volunteered her time as a Den mother for the Tiger Cubs /Cub Scouts. Marva served on the Harvey School Board and the Harvey "Growing with Pride" committee.
Marva enjoyed spending time with family, reading a good book, going to the movies, spending time with friends both old and new, library dates, and 'storm watches' with friends that have gone before her. Some of her happiest times were spent with her grandchildren teaching them how to play Kings in the Corner and showing no mercy when playing. She also enjoyed countless soccer, baseball, and football games in the rain, sleet, and snow for her grandchildren, and was often the loudest spectator on the field. She was also loved by many families that weren't biologically her own whose kids called her Mom and Grandma.
Marva is survived by her three children Leann, Fargo, ND, Andrew, St. Michael, MN, and William (Alison), Murfreesboro, TN; five grandchildren, Nicholas Ness, Noah Ness, Gavin Ness, Lauren Ness, and Jordan Ness; five siblings, Gerald Furaus, St. Louis , MO, Carol (Dale) Lesmann, Minot, ND, Dan (Brenda) Furaus, Mandan, ND, Duane (Sandy) Furaus, Knobnoster, MO, and Vicki Furaus, Colorado Springs, CO; and numerous nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews.
Marva was preceded in death by her husband Leroy, mother Florence (Torgerson) Furaus, and father Philip Furaus.
The family extends a special thank you to the Harvey Ambulance Service, St. Aloisius Hospital, Sanford Medical Center Fargo, Sanford Hospice House at Broadway Medical Center, Fargo, as well as the many friends, family, and co-workers who have provided support during this journey.
Funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at the First Lutheran Church, Harvey, ND with burial following at the Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey. Visitation will be Monday, October 18, 2021 from 4pm-7pm at Hertz Funeral Home in Harvey.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harvey Public Library, the Harvey Ambulance Service or the Harvey Fire Department.
