Marie was born on January 4, 1919 on the family farm near Balta. Marie was the daughter of Anton and Julia (Schneider) Hoffart. She grew up and attended school near Balta. As a young woman, Marie started working as a Nurses Aide at the Rugby hospital. Although Marie said she would have loved to have been a nurse, she always had a natural talent for cooking. Her passion in the kitchen was developed in her early teens while working in the cook-car providing meals for the local threshing crews. Marie continued to pursue her love for cooking while working at the Artos Supper Club of Harvey for several years. Marie married Paul Deck on October 7, 1940. They started their farming homestead just northwest of Selz. They had four children, Ronald, Kenneth, Kathleen and Herbert. Marie and Paul loved to travel exploring many places such as Canada, Missouri, Vermont, Florida, Oklahoma, and Kentucky. Paul passed away on December 27, 1984 and Marie continued to maintain the farm with the help of friends & relatives for over 14 years. She moved into Harvey in September of 1998. Marie was extremely social and was an active member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church, its altar society and Christian Mothers, all of Selz. Marie's active involvement with the Selz Homemakers Group was an inspiration to all the women. Marie was a long-time member of the Veterans Of Foreign Wars and Wells Eagle's Auxiliaries. She taught youth classes at the Farmers Union for many years. You could readily find Marie in her garden or in the kitchen baking kuchen for her family and friends. She also enjoyed scrapbooking, canning and playing cards. Marie never turned down an invitation to a party and always remembered holidays and special occasions of her friends and family. She will be missed dearly. Marie is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Herb and Peggy Deck of Round Rock, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Merle Moen of Rapid City, South Dakota; two daughters-in-law, Barb Deck of Hillsboro, ND and Joan Deck of Pflugerville, Texas; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Julia Hoffart; brothers, Vincent and Joe Hoffart; sisters, Magdalena Hoffart and Theresa Feuerhelm; husband, Paul; sons, Ken and Ronald Deck; grandsons, Dustin and Richard Deck; granddaughters, Shelly and Roxanne Deck. A memorial will be established to honor Marie's love for gardening, the goal is to have a memorial bench placed at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home garden area for all to enjoy. Marie passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 in Harvey. May Marie's soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
