Obituary

Marian Letvin, 89, Grand Forks, ND formerly of the Kief area died Thursday, May 27, 2021 in a Grand Forks Hospital.

Visitation will be Monday, May 31 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Butte, ND with burial following in the Kief City Cemetery.

Marian was born October 2, 1931, to Philip and Martha (Bonnet) Goehring at their farm near Lincoln Valley. She graduated from McClusky High School in 1949 then attended summer school in Minot to become a teacher. She taught in country schools near Lincoln Valley and Kief.

She married Daniel Letvin October 27, 1950, in Drake. They farmed south of Kief where they raised cattle, small grains and a large garden as well as three children. She was known for her borscht and her caramel rolls. They lived on the farm for 60 years until Dan's death in 2011. Marian then moved to Grand Forks near the home of one of her sons.

While on the farm Marian was active in a neighborhood homemakers club and in the Mennonite Brethren Church in Kief. She was a member of the Butte Parent Teacher Association including serving as president. She also was part of a choral group that performed at Easter and Christmas. She and Dan were members of the Ukrainian Cultural Institute and the Eagles Club in Harvey. In Grand Forks she was a member of the Senior Center and just joined the Germans from Russia Heritage Society.

Marian delighted in the activities of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She created many beautiful counted cross stitch pieces that are treasured by her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing FastTrack and playing games on her Kindle. She traveled to Europe, China, Australia, Central America, Mexico and visited every state except North Carolina. She had a lifelong interest in history and genealogy. After moving to Grand Forks she regularly went to the Senior Center where she like playing bingo, pinochle and Farkle as well as visiting with friends at the congregate meals.

Marian is survived by one daughter, Brenda Halvorson, Staples, Minn.; two sons, Gary (Darlene), Rugby, and Craig (Chris), Grand Forks; nine grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Arlene Nylen, Minot; one sister-in-law, Sharon Goehring, Turtle Lake; several cousins and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents; two brothers, Norman and Leslie; one sister-in-law, Marlene; one brother-in-law, Paul Nylen, and one grandson, Patrick Letvin.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Kief Cemetery.
