Lyle Sommer, 83, Harvey, ND died Saturday, October 31, 2020 at Essentia Hospital in Fargo.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4 at Faith Lutheran Church, Harvey, ND.  The funeral will be live stream on https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5-bvo9QH5YnP0Za8NeuMEg . For the safety of all, please be observant of the Covid-19 restrictions including social distancing, hand sanitizing, wearing a mask and staying at home if not feeling well.   Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.

Lyle Darreld Sommer was born on November 9, 1936 east Harvey, ND.  He was the son of Eldon and Emily (Fuhrman) Sommer.  He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Manfred.

He married Patty Schindler in 1958 and they had four children, Rick, Barry, Vicky and Sandy. They later divorced.  Lyle married Alice Lithun on May 26, 2012.  Alice and Lyle grew up together and dated in the early years.  They went their separate ways and reconnected in their later years.  Lyle enjoyed his time with Alice.

Lyle farmed as a young man before moving to California and returning to North Dakota in 1975.  He was a meat cutter, foreman in a California factory, carpenter, mechanic and inventor.

His hobbies were fishing, hunting, and working in his basement.  Lyle also enjoyed gardening.  He and Alice harvested the last of their garden, digging the carrots on the Friday before he entered the hospital.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Alice of Harvey; two sons, Rick and Barry both of Harvey; two daughters, Vicky Sommer of South Dakota and Sandy Schwan of Bismarck, ND; stepdaughter, Julie (Leo) Laube of Carrington; stepson, Mark (Marie) Lithun of Fessenden; four grandchildren, Tony Sommer, Abby Schmaltz, Tara Schwan, Simone Merriman; step grandchildren, Tina (Nathon) Opdahl; Jason (Kristian) Dupaul, Misy (Matthew) Palmer, Cathy (Matt) Schmidt; six great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Faul of Arizona; numerous nieces and nephews. Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dale Sommer, son-in-law, Adrian Schwan.
