Obituary

Dr. Lowell E. Boyum, 90, Bismarck formerly of Harvey, died Monday, March 21, 2011 at Maple View Care Community in Bismarck.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 26 at the First Lutheran Church, Harvey. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.

Lowell E. Boyum was born on February 28, 1921 in Harvey, ND. He was one of three sons born to Manda (Martenson) and Dr. Peter Arndt Boyum. Lowell attended public school there and graduated from the Harvey High School in 1939. After graduating from UND, Lowell received his doctorate in medicine from Baylor University of Medicine of Houston TX, and took his internship in Minneapolis. Lowell began his medical career in the Army stationed in New Mexico. After an honorable discharge, Lowell began his medical practice in Harvey in partnership with his father, Dr. P. A. Boyum. Lowell was once married to Rebecca Pond and they had four children: G. Peter 'Pete', Thomas 'Tom'; Ruth Ann 'Thann'; William 'Bill'. In 1952, Dr. Lowell Boyum, along with Drs. C. J. Beck and A. F. Hammargren, established the Harvey Medical Center. Dr. Boyum served as chief of staff of St. Aloisius Hospital. He was the 'baby doctor,' attending the delivery of around 4,600 babies during his career. In 1978, Lowell transferred his medical practice to the Mid-State Clinic Building. Later, he returned to Lincoln Avenue, this time as an eye doctor.

Dr. Boyum retired in 1986 after 37 years in medical practice. As expressed by June Prom in the Harvey Centennial paper, Dr. Lowell Boyum, "is considered one of Harvey's most 'beloved sons.'" During his career, Dr. L. E. Boyum served as president of State Family Physicians Academy of ND, president of the State Obstetrics and Gynecology Society, and board member of the ND Cancer Society. He served on the Harvey Park Board and the Harvey School Board, and was a member of Fagerlund Sons of Norway of Manfred. He was a lifetime member of First Lutheran Church of Harvey, and the American Legion. A Distinguished Service Award was presented to him by the Harvey Jaycees and Jayceettes for his contributions and service to the Harvey community.

Significant activities during Lowell's youth included scouting, sports, and part-time jobs. He attained the Boy Scouts of America's highest honor of Eagle Scout. Through the years, Lowell greatly enjoyed clowning and participating in many parades by riding his clown bike. He also served on several pastoral call committees for First Lutheran Church of Harvey, ND. After he retired from his medical practice, he married Muriel Melby Schwartz on December 30, 1986 at First Lutheran Church of Mandan, ND. For many years, they alternated between spending time at his home in Harvey and then her home in Mandan, active in both communities. Later Lowell sold his home, but they would return to Harvey from time to time. They moved to the Maple View Care Community in 2010.

Lowell enjoyed attending First Lutheran Church of Mandan and taking part in bible studies there. He was also a member of the Sverdrup Sons of Norway Lodge of Bismarck. Harvey Wells Eagles Aerie and Mandan Eagles Aerie. Together Lowell and Muriel enjoyed traveling, cross-country skiing, square dancing, folk dancing, and attending the Norsk Høstfest where they participated in the Bunad Show. Lowell's interests were wide in scope and he had hundreds of books in his collection, in addition to the hundreds he had given to libraries. Lowell also enjoyed woodcarving.

Lowell is survived by his wife, Muriel of Bismarck; two sons, Dr. Pete (Nancy) Boyum of Stillwater, MN, William Boyum of Cherokee, North Carolina; daughter, Dr. Thann Boyum of Columbus, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Andrew and Holly Boyum. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Wanda (Richard) Melchert of Harvey; stepson, Merlin (Laurie) Schwartz of Sioux Falls, SD; two step granchildren, Jenny Dumke and Andy Schwartz; two step great-grandchildren, Caleb and Ethan Dumke. Lowell was preceded in death by his father P. A. in 1962; mother, Manda in 1986; son, Tom Boyum in 1969; brothers, Francis P. (Tim) Boyum in 1985 and Arne S. Boyum in 1998.

Memorials are preferred to either St. Aloisius Medical Center or First Lutheran Church both of Harvey.
