Lorraine (Mack) Schaefer, 87, formerly of Harvey, ND passed away Thursday, September 13, 2018 at Bethany Nursing Home in Brandon, SD.

A prayer service will be held on Monday, September 17, at 7:00 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home in Harvey.  Visitation will be at the funeral home also on Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A Mass and celebration of Lorraine's life will be held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, in Harvey on Tuesday, September 18, at 10:30 a.m.
Lorraine Frances (Klein) Mack Schaefer was born October 30, 1930 to Frank and Christine (Ripplinger) Klein at their home in Silva, ND. She grew up in Silva with her parents, five brothers, and five sisters. Lorraine graduated from Balta High School in 1948 and married Edward (Ed) Mack in Balta on June 21, 1949. That year, they moved to Harvey and began their life farming.

Lorraine and Ed raised five children on the farm. She was a busy and loving farm wife and mother. She enjoyed gardening and took great pride in her yard and home. Lorraine loved entertaining and always welcomed anyone who came to visit. She also enjoyed traveling and was always ready for a good road trip. Lorraine was proud to be active in her community and St. Cecilia Catholic Church for many years.

Ed passed away in 1992 and Lorraine continued to live on the family farm until 2004. During that time, she enjoyed working at Sue Ann's, a clothing store, in Harvey. She began spending her winters in Arizona where she met Jerry Schaefer. The two, married on February 23, 2006. They enjoyed living in Arizona during the winter months and spent summers in Rapid City, SD.

Lorraine will be deeply missed by her husband Jerry, her children: Brenda (Dan) Furaus, Mandan, ND, Sheila (Dave) Keller, Omaha, NE, Dan (Cheryl) Mack, Woodbury, MN, David (Lisa) Mack, Savage, MN, and son-in-law Stan Buxa, Harvey, ND. Twelve grandchildren: Beth (Kardell) Blumhardt, Jill (Dustin) Beilke, Lori Furaus, Brian (April) Buxa, Kevin (Dani) Buxa, Amy (Matthew) Keller, Allison Keller, Emily Keller, Kendra Mack, Addison Mack, Carson Mack, and Katelyn Mack. Three great-grandchildren: Ethan Furaus, Grace Buxa, and Ellie Buxa. Sisters: Beatrice (Joe) Schall, Delores Carlo, Arlene (Richard) Schmaltz, and Kathy (Tom) Schwinghammer. Stepchildren: Rodney (Susan) Schaefer, Flemington, MO, Cathy (Jim) Peitz, Pierre, SD, Jim (Gail) Schaefer, Rapid City, SD, Karen (Greg) Swenson, Highmore, SD, Jill (Denice) Schaefer, Kansas City, MO, Holly (Jim) Norgaard, Crooks, SD, and Kevin (Linda) Schaefer, Worthington, MN. Fifteen step grandchildren and twelve step great-grandchildren.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband Ed, daughter, Julie Buxa, parents, brothers: Christ, Leo, Henry, Harold, and Jerry, sister Eleanor, many brother and sister in-laws, and step grandson, Winston Hemminger.

The family extends a special thank you to all the caregivers at Hospice, and Bethany Nursing Home.
