Lorraine June Meland, 94, Harvey, ND passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at the St. Aloisius Long Term Care Center in Harvey.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at First Lutheran Church, Harvey, ND. Burial will be in the Bethania Lutheran Cemetery, Wellsburg.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, April 18 at the Hertz Funeral Home in Harvey.
Lorraine June Berndt was born on April 26, 1927 in Minneapolis, MN. She was the daughter of Frederick and Gertrude (Strube) Berndt. As her father worked for the railroad, she was raised and attended elementary schools in several towns including the Minnesota communities of St. Louis Park and St. Paul, and ND towns of Balfour, Minot, Tuttle and Grand Forks. During her high school years, she lived in Hamberg and Glenfield, ND graduating from high school in 1945 at Fessenden, ND. Lorraine graduated from the New York Hair Dressing Academy in Fargo in 1946 and worked at a salon in the Graver Hotel. She attended Interstate Business College in Fargo and worked for four years as a comptometer operator at Standard Oil Co.
Lorraine married Lyle Meland on May 29, 1949 and they made their home in Wellsburg where Lyle farmed raising small grains and dairy cattle. Lyle died on May 26, 2009. In 2011, Lorraine moved into Harvey, becoming a resident of the St. Aloisius Long Term Care Center.
Lorraine was a member of the Bethania Lutheran Church in Wellsburg where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Ladies Aid. She was a member and an officer of the Order of the Eastern Star, the VFW and Eagles Auxiliaries. Lorraine was a current member of the First Lutheran Church in Harvey.
Lorraine is survived by two daughters, Betty Nyhus of West Fargo, Donna (Clarence) Corneliusen of Wellsburg; son, Fred (Nancy) Meland of Harvey; 5 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Kenneth and Raymond; infant twin sister Loretta; husband, Lyle; daughter, Marilyn Meland.
