Leon Degenstein, 52 of Harvey passed away from cancer on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at the St. Aloisius Medical Center, Harvey, ND.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 10 at Trinity Bethany Lutheran Church, Harvey.
Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND.
Visitation will from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.
Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.
Leon was born October 9, 1960 at Harvey, ND. He was the son of Edward and Isabel (Weigel) Degenstein. He grew up in Fessenden and attended school there. Leon continued to live and work in the Fessenden and Harvey areas and served in the North Dakota National Guard Unit in Harvey for six years. Leon married Kathy Helm Borchardt on September 23, 1988 in Fessenden. They moved to Harvey in 1989. Leon began working for the City of Harvey on May 1, 1995. He worked in the street and sanitation department and later at the water plant. He became a Certified Class II Water Treatment and Water Distribution operator through the State of North Dakota. Kathy died on April 14, 2007.
Leon enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren, hunting, fishing and coffee breaks with his coworkers and friends.
Leon was a member of Trinity Bethany Lutheran Church.
Leon is survived by his mother, Isabel of Harvey; step son, Travis of Harvey; step daughter, Nicole Borchardt of Harvey; seven step grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Karin and Daniel Reimche of Harvey; brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Judy Degenstein of Fargo, ND; brothers-in-law, Arlo (Kathy) Helm and Robert Helm of Harvey; sisters-in-law, Jeannette Weltz of Harvey and Janice Kessler of Mora, MN; numerous nieces and nephews.
Leon was preceded in death by his father and wife.
