Obituary

Leo Volk, 94, of Selz and Bismarck passed away June 27, 2023 in the presence of his loving daughter, Judy, at St. Vincent's in Bismarck. Leo's passing came after spending time surrounded by his son and daughters, along with visits and phone calls from grandchildren, relatives, and friends.

Leo was born April 23, 1929 to Peter Volk and Helen Volk (Schmaltz) in Pierce County ND. Leo was one of the first students to attend the new public school in Selz ND as a second grader in  1936. Leo's farming career began at a young age working with his family on their farm and for other farmers in the community.  Leo's Army career began June 1951 where he received tanker training and then became the assistant communications chief serving in Italy during the Korean war.  Leo was honorably discharged in June 1953.

Upon returning home from the Korean War, Leo met and married the love of his life, Agatha Miller. Leo and Agatha were wed November 4, 1957, in Orrin. They made their home in Selz working side by side on their farm while raising their three children. Leo enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, and dancing. Leo and Aggie retired in 1991 and spent time traveling spending several winters in Arizona before moving to Bismarck in 2017. Leo was a loving caregiver to Aggie until her death June 1, 2021.

Leo's first commercial airline flight was in April 2022 when he and his son, Ken, traveled to Washington DC with the Western ND Honor Flight. Leo and Ken, along with a group of veterans, spent two days touring sites such as the National Archives, Lincoln Memorial, Korean Memorial, and World War II Memorial.

Leo enjoyed good health and an active life all his remaining years. He enjoyed camping weekends, along with campfires, with his family at the Volk farm in Selz. These weekends often involved four generations of Leo's family. These times were cherished by Leo and the memories created will forever remain in our hearts.

Leo was a member of the St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Selz, St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Harvey, and Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Bismarck. He enjoyed many good times and conversations with his morning coffee groups both in Harvey and Bismarck.  He also made many friends at Bismarck Senior Center and dancing at the Mandan Eagles. Leo valued his old and new friends alike and has been quoted as saying "I have had many friends and not one enemy".

Leo's loving family includes: children Kenneth (Deborah) Volk Minot ND, Deborah Hauff Bismarck ND, and Judy Volk (Tracy Stein) Bismarck ND; grandchildren Megan (Jordan) Ross Surrey ND, Kathryn Volk Cincinnati OH, Michelle Hauff Bismarck ND, Steven Hauff Drake ND; great grandchildren Archer Ross, Coralie Ross, and Jude Ross; brother Anton Volk and sister Helen Volk; brother-in-law Leonard Gisi; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
