Obituary

EOD Master Chief Keith Douglas Hammargren passed away peacefully on June 2, 2020 in his North Carolina home.  Keith was born in Harvey, ND on March 29, 1963 to Vionnette LeNoue Siverson  and Barry C. Hammargren.  Keith attended Harvey public schools, graduating in 1982.  During his School years Keith was very active in all sports, excelling in track, active in gymnastics and enjoyed helping others with the newly formed Special Olympics in Harvey.  As a teenager Keith accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior.  He was baptized at Crystal Springs Baptist Camp and became active counseling the youth.  Upon graduation Keith enlisted in the United States Navy.

Keith began his military career in 1982 as a boatswains mate and retired in 2008 at the rank of Master Chief in the US Navy.  He served his country for 26 years, where he was highly decorated and awarded the Bronze Star (Combat "V"), Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2 Awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal (2 Awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 Awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy "E" Ribbon 4 Awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (7 Awards), Navy Sea Service Ribbon, Navy Overseas Ribbon (2 Awards), Afghanistan and Iraq Campaign Medals, US Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon, and Rifle and Pistol Expert Medal.  Keith was a Master EOD Tech, serving several tours with Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU).   After retirement, he continued to serve his country in the civilian sector until 2015.  Keith served his country with the highest level of dignity and integrity. Keith would not take credit for these awards, he would tell you they were earned as a team effort.  In 2015 Keith was diagnosed with a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) from cumulative blast exposure and was an integral part of Medical studies in Pittsburgh and California for Brain Research.  Keith's wishes were to donate his brain for Science to study CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy).

Most recently while coming back home to Harvey, Keith was known as the man around town with a radiant, yet quiet smile and the Hero that never gave up. Keith had a very strong  conviction to persevere.  Keith enjoyed spending time with his family, including his niece and nephews.  Most recently he found a host of new and old friends at the local coffee shop!  Keith also was given the title of Safety Compliance Officer of Rustyre' as he helped his brother in law Mike servicing tires.

Keith was preceded in death by his Grandparents; Abel and Evelyn LeNoue,  August F. and Elsie Hammargren,  Father;  Barry C Hammargren, Nephew; Philip M. Rust.

Keith is survived by his wife Donna C. and step children.  Two of Keith's greatest joys were his step grandsons, Bear and Finn of NC.  Mother; Vionnette Siverson of Harvey, brother; Kip (Jodi) Hammargren of Beulah;  Sister;  Kim (Mike) Rust of Harvey.  Niece & Nephews; Michaela Rust, Jacob (Amber) Rust, Camden, Brekken,  Kurt (Kayla) Hammargren, Kellan, Kenzie; Jordan (Chelsie) Hammargren, Zeke, Aiden, and a host of friends whom he loved and who loved him beyond measure.

Keith will be missed greatly by his family and friends and will be remembered as the greatest example of integrity, a selfless man who loved his family and country, and a humble real life hero.  See you on the other side our brother, son, uncle, friend, Papa, and we know you are Blessed with FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS.
