Obituary

Joseph P. Holzer, Jr. 84 of Harvey died Monday, November 13, 2017 at the Sandford Hospital in Fargo.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on  Saturday, November 18 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey.  Graveside services with military rites will be held in the spring at the Carrington City Cemetery.

Joseph Peter Holzer, Jr. was born on January 2, 1933 near Selz, ND to Joseph and Gertrude (Weber) Holzer. The family lived in the Selz and Manfred areas.   Joe attended grade school in Manfred.  He graduated from the Harvey High School in 1951.  He was inducted into the Army on February 5, 1953 and served a year in Germany before being honorably discharged on February 10, 1955.  Joe began his banking career at the First State Bank in Harvey.  He started out as a Teller and was a loan officer and Assistant Vice President when he retired from the bank.  He was once married to Dianne Huber and they had four sons, Keith, Kevin, Kent and Kurt.  Joe also served over 25 years in the North Dakota National Guard unit stationed in Harvey.

Joe married Betty Watson Walicski on November 3, 1978 and they spent their retirement years in Harvey.  Betty died on September 7, 2016.

Joe took pride in his yard, garden and his wildflower garden. He especially enjoyed deer hunting and fishing.

Joe was a member of the St. Cecilia Catholic Church.  He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post where he was the current quartermaster and the Wells Eagles Aerie in Harvey.

Joe is survived by his four sons, Keith (Lori) Holzer of Harvey, Kevin (Joann) Holzer of Mesa, AZ, Kent (Sandy) Holzer of Gilbert, AZ, Kurt Holzer of Gilbert, AZ; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; step daughters, Nancy (Paul) Kram of Langdon, Jayne (Dwight) Peterson of Fargo, Shelly (Jeff) Highness of Dilworth, MN; six step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; sister, Isabelle (Ray) Henne of Harvey; brothers, Duane Holzer of Harvey, James (Ilona) Holzer of Rescue, CA.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters Helen Christopherson and Marlene Moen and his dog Schatze.

Arrangements are with Hertz Funeral Home of Harvey.
