John Schild, 98, of Harvey died Sunday, February 1, 2026 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home of Harvey.
Funeral services will be held at the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Harvey on Friday, February 6, 2026 at 10:30 a.m.
Visitation will be held at the Hertz Funeral Home of Harvey on Thursday, February 5, 2026 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Burial will be in the Sunnyside Cemetery of Harvey.
John was born on April 9, 1927, on the family farm 5½ miles southwest of Harvey. He was the son of William and Louise (Tebelius) Schild. John grew up and attended country school southwest of Harvey and graduated from Harvey High School in 1945. John then began farming with his father.
John married Grace Baumbach on June 2, 1959, and were happily married for 66 years. John and Grace bought the family farm in 1960 from his parents. They lived and farmed there until moving to Harvey in 1989. John continued to work on the farm with his son and his grandchildren, making hay, fixing fence, picking rocks, and working cattle.
John was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Harvey where he served as a deacon. In the late 1970's and the 1980's John worked part time for the ASCS measuring grain bins. He was known for his little green Datsun pickup with the ladder sticking out the back. John served on the board of directors for the Farmers Union Oil Company of Harvey for 22 years. He also served on the board of supervisors for Western Township for many years.
John is survived by his wife, Grace of Harvey; sons, Kenneth (Julie) of Harvey, Glenn (Elaine) of Middleburg, Florida, Jeffrey (Megan) of Bismarck, ND,; 8 grandchildren, Brian (Allison), Michael (Amanda), Steven (Holly), Samantha, Nicolas (Victoria), Brennan (Emily), Gracyn, and Hadley; 7 great-grandchildren; and sister, Lucille Bauman, of San Leandro, CA.
John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Emil Schild, sisters, Lorraine Tesky, Luella Weibe, Margie Weems, and Loretta Weidert.
