Obituary

John A. Mack, 90, Harvey formerly of Balta passed away on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey.
Funeral services will be Saturday, October 2 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Balta. Visitation will be Friday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. with prayer services at 7 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

John August Mack was born on July 22, 1920 on a farm near Orrin, ND. He was the son of August and Magdalena (Schmidt) Mack. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Orrin. He started farming with his father as a young man. John and Magdalena Axtmann were united in marriage on June 7, 1943 in Balta and ten children were born to this union. In those early years John farmed with horses until buying their first tractor in 1936. John and Lena lived and farmed east of Balta. He retired in 2000 and in August 2005 they moved to Harvey.

John belonged to the Mt. Carmel Catholic Church for many years and joined the St. Cecilia Catholic Church after moving to Harvey. He served on the Balta School Board for 18 years and served as its board president. He served as the township tax assessor. John was also a member of the Balta Wildlife Club, Wells Eagles Aerie in Harvey and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing and visiting with friends and family.

John is survived by his wife, Lena of Harvey; seven sons, Blaine (Sandra) of Harvey, Neil (Corrine) of Balta, Terry (Dawn), Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Giles (Sharon) of Branson, Missouri, August (Joni) Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Frank (Deana) Mack, Bismarck, John Jr. (Alissa) of Dickinson; three daughters, Linda (fiancé, Alan Whisman) Hager, Harvey, Joslyn Mack of Post Falls, Idaho and Joyce Mack of Rice Lake, Wisconsin; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Francis Heintz of Minot.

John was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, George, Joe, Ed, Emanuel; four sisters, Katie Martin, Lena Martin, Amelia Hager and Ida Duchscherer; grandson, Tyrone Mack.
