Joseph Martel, 88 of Harvey died Tuesday July 30, 2013 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home of Harvey.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 at the First Lutheran Church, Harvey.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. with prayer services at 7 p.m. at the Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.
Burial will be in the St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery, Selz.
Joseph J. Martel Jr. was born on August 22, 1924 near Selz. He was the son of Joseph and Katie (Wentz) Martel. He grew up and attended school near Selz. As a young man he farmed with his father. Joe married Agnes Leintz in 1943 and they had four children, Sharon, Kenny, Terry and Grant. Joe entered the Army in January 1945, served for a time in Alaska and was honorably discharged on October 24, 1946. He returned to Selz and farmed for a short time. He started working for Schroeder Furniture in Harvey in 1951. His wife Agnes died suddenly in November 1956. He married Jean Wohl on July 22, 1958 in Dickinson and they had eight children, Kelly, Patty, Kathy, Scott, Penny, Wendy, Tracy and Buffy. Joe and Jean continued to live in Harvey and raised the children there. After 36 years of being a carpet installer for Schroeder Furniture, Joe retired in 1986.
During his retirement Joe continued to enjoy fishing, the outdoors and tinkering in his garage.
Joe was a member of the First Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Wells Eagles Aerie # 3080 both in Harvey.
Joe's surviving family includes his wife, Jean, Harvey; five sons, Kenny (Dorothy) of Crystal Lake, Illinois, Grant (Dee) Plover, Wisconsin, Kelly of Sacramento, CA, Scott (Jerry) of Leavenworth, KS, Tracy (Christie) Glyndon, MN; six daughters, Sharon (Tom) Stafford, Carmel, Indiana, Patty (Tim) Kuntz of Bismarck, Kathryn (Marvin) Kanwischer of Fargo, Penny Schulz, Wendy (Kim) Opp and Buffy (Kent) Edinger all of Harvey; 21 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, Edward of West Bend, Wisconsin.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Agnes; one son, Terry in February 2013;brothers Ray and Julius; sister, Isabella as an infant.
