Jeremiah "Jere" Toomey, 77, Harvey, ND beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend died Monday, May 8, 2017 at the St. Aloisius Hospital, Harvey, ND after a lengthy illness.
Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 15, 2017 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey.
Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 14 at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
Jeremiah Robert Toomey was born May 13, 1939 and raised in Shenandoah, PA. Jere received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, completed Residency training in Hospital Pharmacy at the Merchant Marine Hospital in New Orleans and a Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan.
Jere was a proud commissioned officer of the U. S. Public Health Service, in which he served for 26 years and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain.
Jere was instrumental in developing many innovations in pharmacy practice throughout the Indian Health Service that now are recognized standards throughout the country. He served as Director of Pharmacy Services at the Alaskan Native Medical Center, Anchorage, Alaska and Director of Area Pharmacy Services, Portland, Oregon.
Jere was the recipient of the Outstanding Service Medal from the U.S. Public Health Service for his contributions to pharmacy practice and the health and welfare of Native Americans throughout the Indian Health Service.
Upon retirement, he decided to soak up some more sun and moved to Henderson, Nevada. In retirement, he continued to develop and provide pharmacy services to Native American communities in the southwest. The call to be closer to family led to his move to Harvey, ND.
Jere's interests were many. He was an avid cook, enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He played the piano and organ, and loved completing his daily crossword puzzle, for which there was no challenge too great!
Jere is survived by his spouse, Ora Lee of Harvey; daughters, Joni (Brad) Rix, Arvada, CO, Kristina (Kelly) Nitz of Harvey; five grandchildren, Evan, Mariah, Ethan, Liam and Milena; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Joseph (Mary), James, and Dennis (Judy).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Kathryn Toomey; brother, John.
