Jean Marlene (Zweigle) Rust, 85, Harvey, ND, passed away peacefully on December, 26, 2020 at the CHI St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at 2 p.m. at the Martin Baptist Church, Martin, ND. A Celebration of Life service is being planned for June. Burial will be at the Martin Baptist Cemetery, Martin, ND. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church.
Jean was born on July 11, 1935 at St. Aloisius hospital in Harvey, ND, to her parents Roy and Nettie (Reimche) Zweigle. She attended Harvey Schools and graduated from high school in 1953. She attended Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas from 1953 to 1955 where she graduated with an Associate's Degree in business/secretarial. From 1957 until 1959 she worked for the Honeywell Corporation in Minneapolis, MN, and from 1960 to 1961 she lived and worked in San Francisco, CA.
On August 7, 1961, she married James (Jim) Rust, eventually moving to Harvey. Jim started farming that year south of Martin, ND, where they eventually moved in 1967. By this time the Lord had blessed them with three sons, Mike, Jeff and Paul. In 1972, Jean contracted lupus and spent several months in the hospital in Rochester, MN, where she experienced a miraculous recovery and was able to return home and care for her family. Jean would often say that the Lord chose to heal her so she could see her boys and be their mom again.
For over 50 years Jim and Jean lived in Martin where Jean's days were spent caring for Jim and their boys. Jim provided for their family by farming and working on the railroad. Jean made their home a refuge of warmth and hospitality for anyone who stopped in. Frequent guests included, but were not limited to, Jim's family (Adeline, Marcella, Warren, Calvin, Pat, Jan, Buzz, and Juli—including their spouses and children) and the many friends that Jim and Jean accumulated over the years of farming, church-going, and hunting trips with buddies who came all the way from Minnesota and Wisconsin.
In 2020, due to declining health, Jim and Jean transitioned from Martin to Harvey and took up residence in the senior housing wing of the Harvey Nursing home. This apartment would be their new home and although it was a difficult and challenging transition, Jean tried to make the best of it. In November of 2020, Jean suffered a debilitating stroke and was taken to Bismarck where she began the long road of recovery. While in Bismarck her condition gradually worsened and led to her death.
During her 85 years on this earth, she lived a life that mirrored her most dearly held beliefs; God, Family and Community. Her strong faith carried her through many hardships, none harder than battling the effects of lupus, cancer and eventual kidney failure. Jean's faith and love for her boys and their spouses and children were an obvious source of joy in her life. She lived as an example of kindness, generosity, and her life's longing—to see all of her family again in heaven.
Jean is survived by her husband, Jim, of Harvey, ND, her three sons, Mike (Kim) Rust of Harvey; Jeff (Laura) Rust of Bismarck, ND; Paul (Brenda) Rust of Elbing, KS; 7 grandchildren, Jacob (Amber) Rust, Gillette, WY; Janelle (Zach Goodrich), Hesston, KS; Caleb Rust, La Grande, OR; Michaela Rust, Gillette, WY; Cameron Rust, Hesston, KS; Naomi Rust, Bismarck, ND; Clayton Rust and Devin Rust, Elbing, KS; 5 great-grandchildren, Camden and Brekken Rust (Gillette, WY) and Brylee, Jace, and Lakyn Goodrich (Hesston, KS). Jean is also survived by her siblings, Gary (Eleanor) Zweigle, Seattle, WA, Donna (Jim Vinarskai) of San Antonio, TX, and Lowell (Ann) Zweigle of Seattle, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Rheda; infant son, Jonah; and grandsons Philip Rust (Mike and Kim) and Seth Rust (Paul and Brenda). Blessed be the memory of Jean Marlene Zweigle Rust.
