Jean Martel, 81 of Harvey, ND died Friday, February 24, 2017 at her home.

Funeral services will be held at the First Lutheran Church of Harvey on Saturday March 4, at 10:30 a.m.

Visitation will be at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey on Friday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Burial will be held in the spring.

Jean was born on April 6, 1935 in Fargo, ND.  She was the daughter of Emma Wohl and grew up in Anamoose, ND where she attended high school.  Jean also attended one year of college in Minot, ND.  She married Joe Martel on July 22, 1958 in Dickinson, ND.  Along with Joe's four children from his first marriage: Sharon, Kenny, Terry, and Grant, they had eight additional children:  Kelly, Patty, Kathy, Scott, Penny, Wendy, Tracy, and Buffy.  Joe and Jean continued to live in Harvey, ND.  Jean worked at St. Aloisius Hospital as a Ward Clerk for over 30 years, retiring in 2003.  She made many lifelong friends during this time.  During her retirement Jean enjoyed playing cards, bingo, coloring, reading, crossword puzzles, watching football,  other sports, and entertaining family and friends.  Jean was an active volunteer in the community and helped out with many different community events.   Jean was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Wells Eagles Auxiliary 3080.   Jean was a 52-year member and President of the VFW Auxiliary of Harvey, ND.  She was very proud of her accomplishments and very dedicated to her children and volunteer work.

Jean's surviving family includes five sons: Kenny (Dorothy) of Crystal Lake, Illinois, Grant (Dee) Plover, Wisconsin, Kelly of Sacramento, CA, Scott (Jerry) of Leavenworth, KS, Tracy (Christi) Glyndon, MN; six daughters, Sharon (Tom) Stafford, Carmel, Indiana, Patty (Tim) Kuntz of Bismarck, Kathy (Marvin) Kanwischer of Fargo, Penny Schulz, Wendy (Kim) Opp, and Buffy Edinger all of Harvey; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and brother, Rudy Brown of Greenville, Tennessee.

Jean was preceded in death by her mother, Emma; husband, Joe; and son, Terry. Grandma Jean touched the lives of many and will never be forgotten. Rest in peace.
