Hugo Essig, 97, McClusky, ND died Sunday, December 11, 2011 at the St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck.

Funeral services will be Saturday December 17, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, McClusky. Burial will be in the McClusky City Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Friday December 16, 2011 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Hugo was born May 18, 1914 in McClusky, ND. He was the son of Christian and Wilhelmine (Minnie Siegele) Essig. He grew up in the McClusky area and graduated from the McClusky High School in 1933. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Montana and Idaho for several years before returning to McClusky. He married Frances Irene Heslop on August 1, 1940 at the Heslop farm east of McClusky. Frances and Hugo farmed for 15 years east of McClusky. They moved into McClusky in 1955. He was a custodian from 1956 to 1975 at the McClusky Public School. He was elected as Sheridan County Treasurer and served several terms. They continued to live in McClusky. Frances died on October 2, 2010.

Hugo was a member of the United Methodist Church and served as church treasurer and sang in the choir and in duets and men's groups. He was a member of the McClusky Lions Club. Hugo was a member of the GOP and was active in the Silver Hair Legislation in Bismarck. Hugo and Frances enjoyed traveling, woodworking, fishing trips to Minnesota and spending time with family.

Hugo is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Duaine and Janis Essig of Glenwood, MN, Darrel and Renee Essig of Breckenridge, MN; seven grandchildren, Dacie Essig and Raeanna Essig both of Breckenridge; Patty (Tony) Smith and their children, Eon, Alexandra, and Gabriel of St. Louis Park, MN, Andrew (Rebecca) Kvenvolden and their children, Alex, Nick, Chloe, Annabeth, Leif, Elliot, and Asher of Federal Way, Washington; Tony Andreen and his children Andrea, Michele (Josh), and Austin of Perham, MN; Terri Janke and her children Craig, Autumn, and Tanner of Alexandria, MN, James Andreen of Grand Rapids, MN; many nieces and nephews and cousins survive. Hugo was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frances of 70 years; three brothers, Otto, Edgar and Walter.
