Obituary

After living an abundant and self determined life, Henry Dieterle left this world to rejoin his beloved wife January 15, 2013. Henry was born February 1, 1917 on the family farm in Sheridan County north of McClusky. He grew up there and attended rural school. He served briefly with the CCC's, then returned to the family farm where he dedicated himself to caring diligently for the land his father homesteaded and making it a viable opportunity for his descendants. He was united in marriage to Alfhild Marion Person on January 30, 1942. Together they worked and played as a team, holding high the values of family, church and community. To serve, Henry held leadership positions at West Scandia Lutheran Church, was a 4-H Leader, helped organize the local Farm Bureau, served on the Gransville Township and McClusky School Boards, the Lewis and Clark Regional Board, the local telephone cooperative, and was a Soil Conservation Service Director for 30 years. Henry's love for music and his heritage were shown through his participation in the Sheridan County German Singers. Together Henry and Alfhild enjoyed many years of US and international travel beginning with a belated five month honeymoon traveling through the US. They hosted numerous International Farm Youth Exchange students in their home and later visited most in their home countries. They built a home near the family farm in 1978 and lived there until moving to Mandan in October 2001 where they enjoyed the community of Liberty Heights. After 68 years of life together, Henry greatly grieved the passing of Alfhild in February 2009. For the past 8 months he was lovingly cared for at Elm Crest Manor in New Salem. Henry was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, McClusky, and an associate member of Living Water Lutheran Church, Mandan. He was an outgoing individual who enjoyed woodworking, fishing, playing cards, visiting, a challenge, and making a difference. Blessed to having been a part of Henry's life are his children Myron (Phyllis) Dieterle, Kief, ND; Roger Dieterle, Belfield and Marion (Ron) Higgins, Mandan; Grandchildren Shannon Dieterle, Christopher Dieterle, Michael (Cyndi) Dieterle, Evan Higgins, Summer Dieterle, Mariah Higgins, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Alfhild; all siblings, Reuben, Arthur, David, Annie Suckert, Hilda Matz and an infant brother David. Friday, January 18, a time of sharing will be held at Elm Crest Manor, New Salem, at 3:00 PM; and visitation at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky, from 7 – 9 PM. A Celebration of Henry's Life, will be Saturday, January 19, 11:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church, McClusky.
