Obituary

Helen Schmidt, 90, Harvey, ND died Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home, Harvey, ND. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 6 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Harvey, ND.  Visitation will be Sunday, July 5 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with prayer services at the church on Sunday at 7 p.m.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

CDC recommendations including distancing, hand cleansing and staying away if sick will be followed for the visitation and funeral mass.  Wearing of a mask to protect yourself and others is also recommended by the CDC and would be greatly appreciated by the family. The importance of following these recommendations will allow for a safer environment for family and those attending.

Helen was born on August 20, 1929 in Balta, ND.  She was the daughter of Frank and Katheryn (Striefel) Hager.  She was raised in Harvey and went to St. Cecilia Grade School and to Harvey High School where she later graduated.  Helen married Arnold Schmidt on March 1, 1949 and moved to a farm south of Martin.  Arnold died on February 26, 1987 and she moved herself and her home into Harvey 1 ½ years later when all her children were gone.  Helen was an active member of the St. Cecilia Catholic Church and was president of the board of education for 17 years.  She taught CCD for 27 years.  She served as Regent for the Catholic Daughters of America for 7 years.  She was also president of the Harvey Right to Life for 7 years.  She worked for the township board for 17 years and was a truck dispatcher for SHERCO, a farmer owned trucking company.  She was devoted wife and wonderful mother to five children and helped on the farm and in the fields.   Helen's hobbies were painting, sewing, writing poems, singing, reading, designing and gardening.

Helen is survived by one son, Donald of Harvey; two daughters, Brenda Buchmiller of Harvey and Patricia Schmidt of Fargo; 6 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Brenda Hager; brothers-in-law, Joe Sanchez and Leroy Schmidt.  Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arnold; sons, Steve and Kevin; grandson, Darnell; 3 brothers and 5 sisters, Ben Hager, Andrew Hager, Edward Hager, Barbara Goldade, Martha Weigel, Marion Hopkins, Regina Kolshefskey, Catherine Sanchez.
