Helen Barstad, 81, Rugby formerly of Harvey, ND died Sunday, December 30, 2018 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019 at First Lutheran Church, Harvey with Rev. Phil Leer officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3 at the Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.

Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND.

Helen was born on April 2, 1937 in Thief River Falls, MN.  She was the daughter of John and Maymie Gullingsrud.  She grew up in the Thief River Falls area.   The family moved to California when Helen was in her first years of high school and then returned to Thief River Falls where she graduated from Lincoln High School.  Helen married Roland (Pete) Barstad on August 20, 1955 in Thief River Falls, MN.  They lived most of their married life in Harvey. They lived a short time in Dickinson ND.   Helen was a homemaker while her children were young. She was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed having family and friends around her dinner table.

Helen was a member of the First Lutheran Church.  She taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and was a member of the First Lutheran Church Women.  Helen was also a lifetime member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Harvey.

She always loved retail and worked at JC Penney, Jack's Jeans and managed a boutique named Eldora's. After Eldora's closed, Helen opened her own dress shop naming it Sue Ann's.  She enjoyed many years of market trips with Pete, Julie and Suzie.  Her daughter's always commented that they learned more from watching her than they would ever learn in a marketing class.  She loved her customers and always had a pot of coffee on in the back room where they could visit.  Helen and Pete retired in Harvey and then moved to Bismarck for nine years.  Pete died on January 31, 2008. Helen moved to Rugby in 2014. Her pride and joy were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and her eyes always sparkled when they called or visited.

Helen is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Melanie Barstad of West Lake, TX; two daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Howard Schaan of Harvey, ND and Susan and Blaine Schmaltz of Rugby, ND; six grandchildren, Amber (Chris) Metz, Adam (Brittany) Schaan, Markelle (Cameron) Dockter, Lucas Schmaltz, Anne Schmaltz and Kent Schmaltz (fiancée Heidi); three great-grandchildren, Hudson Schaan, Cameron Jr. and Kennedy Metz; brother, Donald (Emmy) Gullingsrud of Orlando, FL; sisters-in-law,  Lois Adolphson and Harriet Gullingsrud.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son Mark in 1983, infant son Randy in 1957; sisters, Carlyn Stadum and Marilyn Podbreger; brother, John Gullingsrud.
