Obituary

Gilbert Schmidt, 90, Harvey, ND died on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at the St. Aloisius Hospital in Harvey.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 8 at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.  Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday June 7 at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey, ND.

Gilbert Delbert Schmidt was born on April 15, 1929 in Martin, ND.  He was the son of A. B. (Adam Ben) and Katharina (Gehring) Schmidt.  The family moved into Harvey in 1941.  He graduated from the Harvey High School in 1947 and went to work as a mason.  Gilbert married Mary Lou Best on November 26, 1950 in Harvey.  He entered the Army on April 3, 1951 and served in Japan during the Korean War.  He was in an engineering battalion and taught bridgebuilding.  Gilbert was honorably discharged on March 25, 1953.  They moved to Wahpeton where he attended the North Dakota State School of Science after which he worked in the lumber business and designed, drafted and acted as a general contractor in constructing residential and commercial buildings. They lived in North and South Dakota, Texas, Minnesota, Nebraska and Tennessee.  He retired in 1992 and they moved back to Harvey.  He was called upon to continue planning and designing several residential homes in Harvey and the St. Aloisius Senior Housing and worked in conjunction with Mid Dakota Lumber on many projects.

Gilbert was passionate about golf, shooting and bowling.  He managed the Harvey Country Club for several years and was instrumental in obtaining grants for the Junior Golf Program. The club honored him with a lifetime membership.  He was also a member of the Eagles Club and American Legion Post in Harvey.  He was active in the Jaycees, Lions Club, NRA and Elks in his earlier years.

Gilbert is survived by his wife Mary Lou of Harvey; daughter, Twila (John) Brodersen of Omaha, Nebraska; son, Cary (Barb) Schmidt of Parkersburg, West Virginia; 4 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys Bennett of Boise, Idaho.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Jason Severson; sisters, Bonnie Schmidt, Vaughn Wangen and DeLores Keller; brothers, Raymond and Chester.
