Gilbert Kessler 90 of Martin, ND died Thursday May 21, 2015 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Martin Baptist Church, Martin, ND.
Visitation will Monday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.
Burial will be in the Martin Baptist Cemetery.
Gilbert was born on July 4, 1924 near Anamoose, ND. He was the son of William and Lydia (Lang) Kessler. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from the Anamoose High School in 1942. He served in the Army for several years and was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone after World War II. He was honorably discharged and returned to the Anamoose area. He began working as a conductor for the Soo Line Railroad in 1949. Gilbert was united in marriage to Betty Harr on August 24, 1950 in Martin. They lived in Martin. Gilbert became the Postmaster of the Martin Post Office in 1963 and retired in 1987. Betty died on July 15, 2004. Gilbert continued to spend the rest of his retirement in Martin.
Gilbert was a member of the Martin Baptist Church where he served as Treasurer for 26 years. He served as chairman of the church building committee when the new church was built in 1964. He also served as the Martin Baptist Cemetery Sexton for several years.
Gilbert was a Life Time Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Harvey. He served on the board of directors for the Wells Sheridan Aging Council in Harvey. He was also a member of the Harvey Country Club and enjoyed the game of golf for many years and well into retirement.
Gilbert is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Janelle Kessler of Grand Forks, ND; daughter Carla Geiken of Savage, MN; five grandchildren; three great-granddaughters.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, Elroy and Milton; sister, Viola Gienger.
