Emily Sommer 97, Harvey died Wednesday February 20 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home, Harvey. Funeral services will be held at the Bethel Baptist Church, Harvey on Saturday February 23 at 10:00 a.m. Visitation Friday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey. Burial will be in the Carrington Cemetery, Carrington, ND.
Emily was born on April 29, 1915 near Bowdon, ND. She was the daughter of John and Caroline (Dietrich) Fuhrman. As a young girl they lived in Hurdsfield where she helped her father run the meat market. Emily moved to Fessenden and attended the last years of her schooling finishing the eighth grade. Emily was saved as a young girl at revival meetings at the Nazarene Church in Fessenden. As a young woman Emily worked for the Alvin Kuskes family. Emily married Eldon Sommer on April 6, 1933. They lived and farmed northwest of Manfred. In 1958, with Eldon's health failing, they moved to Carrington. Emily was a cook at the Chieftain Café. Eldon died on November 6, 1965. Emily then moved to Harvey to be near her family. While living in Harvey she worked at the Town and Country Café until the age of 70. Emily enjoyed sewing, gardening and quilting. She made many quilts for her friends and family.
Emily was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church of Harvey where she enjoyed working and going to Bible study.
Emily is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Dean Almer of Harvey; one son and daughter-in-law, Lyle and Alice Sommer of Harvey; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Tanny Hazen of Yucaipa, CA.
Emily was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eldon; son, Dale; 16 siblings; one great-grandchild.
