Emanuel Volk, 83, of Martin died Friday April 10, 2020 at his daughter's home in Casselton, ND.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22 at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.
CDC recommendations including distancing, hand cleansing, limiting your time spent at the funeral home to under 15 minutes and staying away if sick will be followed for the visitation. Wearing of a mask to protect yourself and others is also recommended by the CDC and would be greatly appreciated.
A Private Mass will be held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church and a celebration of his life will take place at a later date. Burial will be in St. Cecilia Catholic Cemetery. The funeral will be streamed live on YouTube with a link posted prior to the service on Thursday.
Emanuel Volk, age 83, of Martin, ND, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on April 10, 2020. Emanuel was born on December 4, 1936, in rural Balfour, ND, to Joseph G. and Magdalen (Lemer) Volk. He grew up in the Balfour, Drake, and Orrin areas and he attended country school there. On September 7, 1959, Emanuel married the one true love of his life, Leona Schatz in Balfour, ND. They moved to Drake, ND, where he was employed at the Drake Creamery. After working various jobs in the area, they moved to Harvey, ND, where he worked at Keller Implement as a tractor mechanic. He then started selling Watkin products, and in 1970 they purchased a farmstead in rural Martin, ND, where they still reside. After a period of time, he went back to working as a tractor mechanic at Keller Implement, later known as Green Vision. Throughout the years he played guitar, sang, and yodeled in several bands for different occasions. He had a great love for music, which included playing acoustic, bass, and steel guitar, harmonica and accordion, as well as harmonizing with his wife Leona. His great love of music was passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Leona and he served as Ma and Pa for numerous SEARCH for Christian Maturity retreats; thus, informally adopting numerous other children, especially close are Jesse and Anita Zapata, Donna, TX. Love for their German heritage gave the children an idea to send them on a dream trip to Germany, Austria, and France for their 40 th anniversary. Grandparenting and gardening were two of his other great passions. Leona and He were members of the Harvey Eagles and are members of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey, where Emanuel was an active member of the 3 rd and 4 th degree Knights of Columbus, once serving as Grand Knight.
He is survived by his wife Leona and nine children, David (Mary) Volk, Moorhead, MN; Debora (Paul) Lies, Bismarck, ND; Duane (LeeAnn) Volk, Coffey, MO; Jacinta (Nick) Schmaltz, Rugby, ND; Margaret (Darin) Keller, Horace, ND; Sandra (Rick) Keller, Casselton, ND; Kevin (Kristi) Volk, West Fargo, ND; Keith (Melissa) Volk, Tacoma, WA; Justin Volk, San Francisco, CA; 27 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren; sister Tillie Reinowski, Harvey, ND; sisters-in-law, Agnes Volk, Bismarck, ND; Bernadine Schiele, Minot, ND; Luella (Albert) Vetter, Martin, ND; Linda (Curtis) Joern, Harvey, ND; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph G. and Magdalen Volk, brother David Volk, sister and brother-in-law Lorraine and Clinton Dye, brother-in-law Lawrence Reinowski, mother and father-in-law Clemence and Margaret Schatz, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Edmund and Rose Schatz, brother-in-law Jerome Schiele, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Florence and Carl Zeigler, grandchildren Theodore Volk and Corbin Volk and great grandchildren Elise Volk and Carson Reid.
Memorials are preferred to the donors choice or may be given to the family.
