Elizabeth (Betty) Grad was born June 19, 1923 on the family farm between Balta and Selz, ND to Joseph and Caroline (Lesmeister) Grad. Betty was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Selz, ND.   She received her education in rural schools in that area.

Betty worked and babysat for her two oldest sisters in her early teens. She did a lot of waitress work throughout the years of her life. In 1938, Betty and a close cousin left home to seek employment. She worked at the Empress Café in Devils Lake, ND and at the Grant Café in Minot, ND. She always went home during the busy season of the summer to help her mother on the farm. In 1941, she moved to Harvey and worked at the Gambles Store as a clerk for two years. In 1943, she went to work at J.C. Penney's as a clerk. In 1945, she started work at St. Aloisius Hospital as a nurse's aide.

Betty married Gilbert Rudnick on October 3, 1949 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at Anamoose, N.D. They lived on the Rudnick family farm where they raised their five children with love, values and hard work. Betty was a devoted wife and hard worker who helped her husband with the dairy ranch and farming operation. She was also her husband's substitute school bus driver for 12 years for the White Township Consolidated School and three years for Anamoose Public School. In 1953, Betty worked part time at Fischer's Drug Store in Anamoose.   In 1966, she continued part time waitressing in Harvey, ND at the A & W Restaurant, the Dairy Bar and the Tastee Freeze (her family's favorite place to go for a treat).   In 1982, she was employed at Berg's Variety Store for two years and worked at Warehouse Grocery as a checkout clerk for two years.

Betty was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who always put her family first. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and sewing clothes for her children, working in her yard and gardening.   She loved music, dancing and square dancing in her younger years. Betty loved reading, genealogy, playing cards and entertaining her family, relatives and friends. Betty will always be known for her excellent cooking and baking skills; especially her German Wedding Kuchen that she made for every grandchild's wedding. Her family would request her pan noodles or cheese buttons with watermelon. Her countertops were always filled with baked goodies especially at Christmas time. Whenever someone would stop in to visit, her first question was always, "Would you like something to eat?" She especially enjoyed her grandchildren who were a great part in her life. Betty was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and was active in the Altar Society and Christian Mothers.

Betty is survived by her husband, Gilbert of 65 years; three sons, Randy (Tami) Rudnick of Bismarck, Gerry (Mary) Rudnick of Bismarck, Paul (Brenda) Rudnick of Anamoose; two daughters, Paulette (Dave) DeFoe of Alexandria, MN and Paula (Mike) Froemke of Moose Lake, MN; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Paulette Carol; an infant grandson, Jared Rudnick; daughter-in-law, Kathleen (Leintz) Rudnick; six brothers, Edward, Leo, Walter, Nick, Philip and Louie Grad; three sisters, Rose Axtman, Lena Hager and Theresa Schwan; two infant sisters; several in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hard working hands now laid to rest. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
