Edward Gefroh, 88, of Lisbon, ND formerly of Anamoose and Drake died Friday, June 9, 2017 at the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon.

Funeral Mass 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 14 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Drake, ND.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral arrangements through Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 15 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Edward was born December 10, 1928 in Balta, ND to Lena Magdalene Gefroh. His father was Frank Volk. For several years Ed lived on a farm owned by his uncle, John near Rolla, ND. Lena married Peter Eisenzimmer. Ed lived with his mom and stepfather in the Anamoose area where he attended the White Township School. He served in the Navy on board the USS Antietam CB 36 from 1947 to 1951 and was honorably discharged. He was stationed in Vallejo, CA. He returned home to North Dakota and worked for a railroad as an assistant foreman on a section crew. Ed married Eleanor Retzlaff in 1952. They were later divorced. Ed married Antoinette "Toni" Fisher on January 18, 1963 in Watertown, SD. They lived in Onamia, MN where they owned a tavern and gas station for several years. They moved back to Anamoose where he served the communities of Anamoose and Drake as Chief of Police for four years. They moved to Las Vegas where he owned and operated a super-vak business cleaning parking lots and the race track at Ceasars Palace.

Ed and Toni moved back to Drake where he worked for Haugen's Cattle Ranch for four years. He and Toni were married for fifty years before her passing on December 24, 2013. He continued to live in Drake for a time before moving to the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon.

His hobbies included woodworking. He made doll houses and semi trucks out of wood and would give these away.

Edward was a member of the St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church and Third Degree member of the Knights Of Columbus Council # 5856 of Drake. He was a member and Past Commander of the Oswald Wohl VFW Post in Anamoose.

Edward is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Steve Whalen of Cass Lake, MN; sons, Duane and his wife, Terri Aukes of Spring Lake, MN, Greg Aukes of Long Lake, MN; three grandchildren, Jacob Whalen, Steven Whalen, and Elizabeth (John) Conant; nine great-grandchildren.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents; step-father; his wife, Toni; brothers, Donald, Raymond and Leonard; sister, Viola Johnson; grandson, Jason Aukes.

Edward died on Friday, June 9, 2017 at the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon.  May Edward's soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
