Edna Adeline Helm was born on September 8, 1925 on the family farm south of McClusky, ND. She was the 11th of 14 children in the family of Fred & Margaretta (Pleines) Helm. Edna was baptized and confirmed at the St. John's Lutheran Church in McClusky. She grew up on the family farm and attended rural school.
Edna married Alvin Brackett on December 30, 1945 in McClusky. They lived in Bismarck where Edna worked at Deluxe Cleaners for a number of years before moving to Mercer where they operated Al's Bar. Following that they spent a short time on a farm southwest of McClusky. They then moved into town where Alvin worked for Bud's Furniture and Theil Lumber. Edna worked at several businesses including Sorenson's Red Owl, Bud's Furniture, and the Sheridan Memorial Home. Alvin had quite the entrepreneurial spirit and Edna encouraged and supported him in realizing his dreams. Together they remodeled the former East Side Grocery into a 5-unit motel which they operated until they built the larger, 12-unit Motor Motel and Hi-Way Café on the west side of McClusky. Alvin passed away in the spring of 1980 and shortly after Edna transferred the motel and cafe to family and moved into town. Edna enjoyed working at the Hi-Way Café throughout the 80's and was instrumental in preparing the weekly strudel and cheese button dinners. Later, she helped her daughter and son-in-law in the Hardware Hank store in McClusky where she was happy to greet customers and friends.
Edna loved to be with family. She enjoyed meeting for coffee and cookies with her sisters. Her siblings were her friends, her children were her life. She especially liked attending her grandchildren's ball games and activities.
Edna is survived by 3 sons, Freddie (Barb) Brackett of Detroit Lakes, MN, Richard (Laurie) Brackett of McClusky, and Alvin (Pam) Brackett Jr. of Newcastle, WY; 1 daughter, Faye (Paul) Hagen of McClusky; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 8 brothers, Edwin Helm, Adolph Helm, Fred Helm Jr., Christ Helm, Julius Helm, Albert Helm, Walter Helm, and Arnold Helm; 5 sisters, Lydia Schaeffer, Martha Roth, Emma Lauer, Pauline Broeckel, and Anetta Murray.
Edna passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at the Baptist Home in Bismarck. Blessed be the memory of Edna Brackett.
