Obituary

Edmund J. Gumeringer, 92, of Esmond, ND, passed away on Tuesday August 18, 2020 at St. Aloisius Nursing Home, Harvey, ND.

A celebration of life and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 24 at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Harvey.  Visitation will be Sunday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and a Rosary followed by a prayer service beginning at 6 p.m. at the St. Cecilia Catholic Church.   Burial will be in the church cemetery. CDC recommendations including social distancing, hand sanitizing, wearing masks, and staying away if not feeling well are strongly encouraged.

Edmund and his twin brother and best friend for life, Edward; were born on March 28, 1928 to Joe and Margaret (Klein) Gumeringer.  He was raised on the family farm near Esmond.  Edmund graduated from Esmond High School in 1946.  He taught grades 1-8 for four years for Strausberg School District – rural Esmond.  Edmund served honorably in the US Army 1951-1953.  He trained at Fort Knox, Kentucky and was awarded the PFC Leadership Award while stationed at Fort Kobbe, Panama.

Edmund married Leah Gisi on June 14, 1954 at St. Anthony's Church in Selz.  They were married 59 years.  Together they raised four children; Ron (Toni) Gumeringer of Bismarck, Kathy Gumeringer of Esmond, Joann (Jim) Guerard of Bismarck and Jackie (Darwin) Subart of Highlands Ranch, CO.  They were blessed with ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  Edmund loved his family.  He was a good husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

Edmund farmed and ranched at his Esmond farm for more than 50 years.  He served on the Alexander Township Board for 60 years and received the ND Government Grass Roots Leadership Award in 2008. Edmund was a proud member of the Esmond VFW Post 4251.

Edmund was devoted to his Catholic faith and was an active member of St. Anthony's and St. Cecilia's all of his life.  Some of his favorite prayers were "God Bless", "God's Will" and the Lord's Prayer.

Edmund is survived by his four children, eight grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren his sister Delores (Edmund) Hager of Rugby, ND and a brother William (Cathy) Gumeringer of Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Leah who died on January 30, 2014; twin granddaughters Mary and Emmalee Gumeringer; sisters: Betty Black and Judy Austin; brothers: Frank, Ray, Bert, Edward and two infant brothers: Jacob and George.

Memorials may be given to St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 413 East Brewster, Harvey, ND 58341 or a food bank of the donor's choice.
