Duane Holzer, 86, Harvey, ND died Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the St. Cecilia Catholic Cemetery, Harvey, ND.
Duane was born on October 19, 1938, in Harvey, ND and was the first baby born at the renamed and Sisters of Mary of the Presentation owned, St. Aloisius Hospital. He was the son of Joseph and Gertrude (Weber) Holzer. He grew up in the Manfred and Harvey areas. Duane attended school in Manfred and in Harvey. While growing up he set pins at a Harvey bowling alley. He also joined the ND National Guard at the age of 17 and served 10 years and 11 months in the Guard Unit in Harvey. In August 1958 Duane started working for the ND Department of Transportation. He operated heavy equipment and drove truck, especially enjoying the snowplow. In 1994 he was champion of the North Dakota DOT Statewide Snow Fighter and Motor Grader competitions. He retired from the DOT in 2004 and continued to reside in Harvey.
During Duane's off time he ran Holzer Contracting patching and sealing asphalt. He was a fixer from working on his daughter's cars to carpentry work. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, telling jokes, and visiting his friends. When he was younger he would take the family camping. He also played the accordian.
Duane was once married to Gladys "Mickey" Liebe and they had two daughters, Julie and Jeana.
Duane was a member of the St. Cecilia Catholic Church and the Wells Eagles Aerie both in Harvey.
Duane is survived by two daughters, Julie (Kevin) Theige of West Fargo, and Jeana (Dirk) Rynestad of Burlington, three grandchildren, Amanda (Trew) Thompson, Britta (Silas) Sneed, Logan Rynestad; three great-grandchildren, Maddox Sneed, Colter Sneed, and Hazen Sneed; sister, Isabelle Henne of Harvey; brother James (Ilona) Holzer of Rescue, CA.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents; brother Joe; sisters, Helen Kost Christopher and Marlene Moen.
Memorials are preferred to the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation, 500 North 8th Street, Bismarck, ND 58501.
